The reverse lights are on the "meter" fuse under the dash but its unlikely to be that given they work sometimes. It could be the switch on the tranny but that seems unlikely too given they work at night. Are your tails a new install? Do the reverse lights only work when the headlights are ...

so I installed it then tryied both ways to see which one would blow.

They should suck, not blow.

Yep, don't take the headliner out. That would be silly. There's obviously another input to the system because what you had isn't stock. You'll need to identify what other components had an input into that circuit and work backwards. Have you changed a battery lately? Remote one? Something made it ch...
