Well I read that if you plug up the EGR valve then when the ECU opens the valve it could damage the engine since it's expecting exhaust that's blocked off, and it runs lean.

Before I put buy Probe headers I wanted to know two things. First, to put it on the B6DE does it require any more modifications than matching the plate where it meets the engine to fit the gasket? Second, does anyone know if the Probe headers have a port for the EGR pipe? I could delete the EGR but ...

Sounds like the alternator is leaking oil that smells like fuel.
J/K but if you smell fuel, then you're either running rich or you have a fuel leak somewhere.

Yep oil is getting into the cylinders, and I agree with what Savin says. I'd buy a set of gaskets for the head and piston rings, take the head off, hone the cylinders, replace the rings, replace the head gaskets, and see if that solves the problem.
