Still at it
Currently rebuilding a BP with forged rods to upsize my B5ZE to BP in the AZ-3 with evo 8 turbo. Facebook has destroyed forums - FB as an information resource is absolutely useless.
Also have my RX-7 FD with a KLDE turbo

Hmm there was someone on one of the Mazda FB groups selling linkage kits. If I come across it again I'll link you.

If you didn't hear any noises sounds like ground. Otherwise could be sticky solenoid, a whack with a hammer can dislodge it temporarily.

Re: Problems with decent running engine
Hmm got the Midas touch there!
So are you confident you're getting spark at sensible times on all cylinders?
I'd check for codes
Check timing marks are all good on the belt / pulleys
Check compression is good
Check timing is set with timing light
Is the black sensor coolant for the ECU? You could ...

For my 1.5 b5ze I basically built the miata/mx5 build for DIYPNP. My pin out is available at:

Maybe not much use if you're not DIYPNP though.

About time I did an update. Car has been running well. Swapped in my Walboro 255, improved 3rd 4th AFRs, but did reveal how it starves with less that half a tank :?

Hey, would you not just skim the head and put a new gasket on? It's a better engine than the 1.6 anyway! Gearbox would fit though. A lot of things are interchangeable.

Re: doing a full engine rebuild! oil leaked out on the track
The pistons are not symmetrical. They have markings near the pins.
The pictured ring compressor is what I used, plus oil and then just slip the skirt in then a few taps on the top with a piece of wood. Remember to clock your springs and adjust gaps as required.
Torque wrench angles, never bothered ...
