Thinking of buying a 4cyl MX3, what is the potential?

Post by Juans_93_MX3 »

As many of you know me, I own a V6 MX3 and am thinking of doing the 5speed swap aswell as KLZE with other mods
Anyway, lately I been finding 4cyl MX3s for cheap and I just got a couple questions

1.) A BPT should run me from $800 to $1200 and that includes the turbo and piping aswell as the turbo manifold?
2.) What is the fastest way to get atleast 240hp out of these BPTs?
Can you upgrade the turbo to like a T3/T4, 3inch downpipe/exhaust manifold/exhaust, bigger fuel injectors, boost control?
Seriously, is it hard to get these BPTs to 240hp without spend too much money?

I can buy a RS for like $1000 and after I paint my MX3 GS I can sell it for $2200
I am willing to spend about $2000-$2500 on a MX3

BPT swap is about $1000, but is it a easy swap?
I can get a T3 for like $300. But would a T3 work well with a BPT?
I wouldnt mind spending more money on a intercooler.

Now tell me, is it easy to mod the BPTs like it is to like say a GST Eclipse or GSX Eclipse where all you really have to do is add a bigger exhaust, intercooler, boost control, dyno tune, bigger turbo and other small stuff to get to about 240hp?
In other words, a few mods here and there, dyno tuning and bam 240hp?

I'm just kind of hyped about the BPT because it does come with a turbo

you can prolly get close to 220hp without ugrading the turbo on the bpt.
95 RS so far just a paintjob, rims suspension next then turbo...

How much does a BP cost (not a BPT)?
Can the internals take a good beating?
What would be a better option? Buying a BPT then changing the turbo or buying a BP and adding a turbo system?

Also, if I just want to hit 220hp, what mods would I go for?

Or how about this, if I just want to stick at 200hp and 160ft torque, other then changing the engine, water pump, timing belt and the other parts is there anything big I have to change that might cost me alot of money?
No need to change tranny or wiring harness?
Is it a simple swap?

the bp is can be had for cheap and it can take up to 25 psi on stock internals. If you are planning on upgrading the turbo on the bpt right away I would start off with the bp and buy the turbo mani for it that will be cheaper then buying a bpt and then ugrading the mani and the turbo. If you are not sure the bp can take some boost, talk to limegreen he's got a bp with stock internals and hes making 12 sec passes....

So how much do BPs cost and do I have to get them imported like BPTs and KLZEs?
Simple swap?

well they are easy to swap into pre94 mxs 94,95,95 are a pain to wire... You can get them locally no need to import, they came in 90-94 proteges and escorts...

it's hard to decide, but if i'd ever do it again i'd be tempted to:

- 92-93 4Cyl
- BPT (maybe even Supercharge it? I like the N/A responce of the ZE)
- GS Steering rack
- GS Disk Brakes
- Possibly AWD (now that we know it's been done, I'd love too!) In that case, lowering it for racing or raise it for rally?

I think I am going to go that route then
Seeing that these BP engine have alot more potential then the KLZEs

I think I can get away with spending $2000 on a turbo system for the BP engine. Everything from fuel mangment to the turbo itself
What is the best turbo for a BP?
