Outlaw Thermal Insulators

Post by Johns93GS »

I have seen the banner at the top of the page for the Outlaw Engineering Thermal Insulators... are they for the KLZE or the K8? And... what exactly do they do?

they make it for both ZE and K8....they keep the intake manifold cooler by insulting it from the heads with phenolic...

I have a set on my ZE, they are high quality. I've read some guys on Probetalk claiming they don't do anything for power, and I wouldn't know since I have nothing to compare it to, but IMO the manifold does seem cooler after a hard run at the track, but it can still get ridiculously hot

I have run them on my MX-6. It does seem to make the intake manifold cooler. Did they make any power?? I'm not really sure. I'm getting them for my KLZE swap in my MX-3 so I can't be to upset with the performance of them.

even if it does give more power the number would be so small you wouldnt notice it, but its still a good idea to do cause less heat is better than more heat

They move it up ~1/4". I didn't use any gaskets when I put mine in. I just put gasket dressing on both sides of them. Gasket dressing isn't the silicone stuff its a thin brown tacky substance.

Why not someone who is going to buy em do the test for everybody? I mean, same engine condition, same water temp, difference between before and after the install. I suppose nobody is going to unbolt his manifold to test that ( or there is?) :)

it has been done.
Luc St.Piers GSR page has a nice write up about it. My IM is way cooler after installing the spacers....however after the car has been shut down the heat gradually crosses over. for the price..it is a worthwhile mod.

The action of the IM in heating the inlet air is the reverse of an intercooler in a turbo'd engine. If you compare the IM to the intercooler, in terms of the amount of metal in contact with the moving air, its fairly easy to see that the IM is not going to be very "efficient" at heat transfer. So, despite the fact that the metal is noticeably cooler, I would expect the benefit of the insulating spacers in preventing the air being heated to be pretty small. I think you'd be lucky to see a measurable effect under normal road conditions.

A comparative set of dyno runs would be interesting.

Re-shaped and re-sized gearshift lever. Best driveability mod you can do!
