high pitched whine from the tranny?

ok i have a 93 mx-3 w/ the 4cyl & 5spd tranny..anytime that the engine is under acceleration, there is a loud whine coming from beneath the hood...sounds similar to the sound of a super charger. as the rpm's climb, the sound gets louder...sounds like a belt being loose, or off center, and rubbing against something.

but the weird thing is, it makes this sound in all gears(accelerating or decellerating), including nuetral. but when i push the clutch pedal in, the sounds gets softer as the rpms' drop...and eventually it is silent once the tach reaches 0 rpm's. I know its not a belt, because i can be cruising down the highway at 60 mph with it whining, but the minute i push the clutch in it begins to fade until it is silent.

my last car was an rx-7, and it made similar sounds when the pilot bearing was going out. sound familiar?

sounds like gear whine to me...check ur transmission gearbox oil

whew, hopefully thats it...not that big of a problem, some Redline should solve that :D

but, from what i understand its somewhat of a pain to reach the filler hole for the tranny fluid? anyone got any tips and/or tricks?

ya my car does the same thing too, i recently changed my clutch and it started to do the whine too, if it is the pilot bearing do i have to drop the tranny to replace it?

to get to the pilot bearing, you have to drop the tranny.

check to make sure you're belts aren't too tight first. too much tension can put a strain on the belt/pullies and create "whine".
Fast imports only come on two wheels.

i dont think it is a problem with the belts. like i stated in my original post, once the clutch pedal is pressed (engine mechanics seperated from the transmission mechanics) the noise stops. the engine will be in full swing, still running, belts still turning, but the whine is absent. i am correct in my understanding that if it was a problem with the belts...there would be no relation to the clutch, arent i?
