1.8L DOHC BP ENGINE QUESTION

Post by jap »

At first i will just swap a Bp 1.8L dohc engine into my 1993 Sohc mx3 and my next step will be to turbo it. I know I have the option to get the bpt engine but money is going to cost alot more to do everything at once. I'm going to take it step by step. Anyways here are my questions.
1. How much pound of boost can the bp 1.8L dohc block take before blowing?
2. Does the 1990 to 1994 bp 1.8L dohc engine bring the transmission that tells the speed of the car to the cluster by a cable that comes out the transmisson?
3. Do you guys know any website where i can go and get performance parts for that engine like forged pistons and rods?
4. How much horses does the bp 1.8L dohc engine come with?

If ya look around you can find answeres to most of these questions by searching here or in the forced induction board.
1. 10-12 (i think memory is foggy)
2. you will either have to fabricate soemthing or have a hybrid setup the mx3 speedometer system is electrcal whereas the bp is cable driven.
3. Do your research on the motor the results may suprise you.

the regular BP will take upwards of 30 lbs of boost if you tune it right with enough fuel. Dave Lauzier and Ric have both shown this.
You dont need to ever look at aftermarket rods or pistons, as there's no use.
[ March 26, 2003: Message edited by: ProtegeSTS ]

I am very open to the fact that I could be wrong here, but dont the earlier 1.6 Mx3's use a cable for the speedometer? I just read on one other website that it does....

Some earlier model SOHC speeds had a speedo cable. Only way to find out is to takeit out as far as I know. I've never heard of a GS with a speedocable, I have a 1992, and I have taked out 3-4 different 92 clusters.

I just went out and checked, I definitely DO have a speedometer cable, runs up from just behind the drivers side of the engine and up thru a grommet on the firewall directly behind the instrument panel. Thats on a 1993 1.6 SOHC w/automatic.

As far as the 1992-93 SOHC MX3 transmission goes the speedometer is cable. The question I was asking was if the protege LX transmission
speedometer was cable. From the replies I have gotten from the protege website I have realized that the 1990-94 do have cable.
Now from all the reasearch I have done, I keep on reading about haveing an axel problem when the BP engine is installed in the car. Now this is confusing because I have heard a bunch of solutions but dont know which one is true. These are the solutions I've heard.
1. To usel the V6 right axel and jackshaft
2. That the 92-93 straight axels do not use a jackshaft and it can be used for the right side of the transmission
3. I heard just to cut the protege axels and weldit back to make it shorter so it would fit our cars.
My question is which is true?

where are you getting this motor from? why not think of getting a j-spec 1.8dhoc bp turbo for about 1100 dollars through corksport. a friend of mine has the kl-ze j-spec in his 94 probe with a little bore done to it and a few things i refuses to tell anyone...and we are going to be turboing it soon we hope! pray with us that he gets money!! and from what ive seen his car do its a great engine and it would be a good idea to go with that...i know i am one day someday when i get money!! good luck to all with their cars
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!
