Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
The MX6 transmission has a different final drive, the 5th gear is the same AFAIK.
I do believe the 626 had a taller 5th though... All years of 626 have the same FD as the MX6 as well.

Mx6/626/Probe/Mx3 V6's all have the same 5th gear.. The only way to get the better 5th gear is swapping it in your self... the 626 5th gear people talk about is not from a KL transmission.. its from a different generation 4 cylinder.. the info is out there search it... The other option is a SOHC escort 5th gear.. same gear ratio as the 626 that people talk about..
626/Probe/Mx3 are said to all have the 4.38 final drive...
Mx6 are said to have the 4.10 final drive...
I don't know how far this all goes or how you can tell the difference with out tearing the transmissions apart...
I have had a BP Kia transmission apart before... From what I remember they also have a 4.10 final drive.. I believe they also run the same 28 spline axles... They have a thicker ring gear like the K motor transmissions.. You should be able to swap out the gear sets...
If you really want gas saving, you want to run an escort final drive and 5th gear... At 70mph, I am around 2500 - 2800rpm...

My apologies crazycanadian but your info may not be accurate. There's lots of info on this subject but just to get you started kulluminati777 you can read through this post. http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.ph ... ssion+gear.crazycanadian wrote:MrMazda92 wrote:The MX6 transmission has a different final drive, the 5th gear is the same AFAIK.

Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
There is a lot of info... I have read various different stuff... some that contradicts one another... Its hard to sift threw whats right and whats not... I have had a bunch of the different G series various apart now, but not all of them...Daninski wrote:My apologies crazycanadian but your info may not be accurate. That post you linked has a contradiction to something I found when pulling a probe transmission apart.. Davmac says that a probe transmission is a hybrid with 4.11's.. The one I pulled apart had 4.38's...

Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
2nd Gen Probe transmissions have the same final drive as MX-3s from the factory, at least every 2nd Gen Probe I've ever seen in person... That's only 3, from various years, but they were definitely stock.

Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
Mx-3 and Probe are suppose to be the same
Mx-6 and 626 are suppose to be the same
I've read threads that people have found 4.10's in Probes, that there seems to be mixes and changes in the later years, unless they've been swapped earlier in their life with the other, but there's no way to know unless you do a VIN check/comparison. As they get older, more the chance than the trans/motor could of been swapped. And to know the ratio, you gotta count :S

Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
Well, to know it exactly you do... Most people can tell the difference between the 2 by driving the car, but they wouldn't know the exact ratio... That's true.

Re: [WTB] V6 transmission from MX6
I believe you'll get about 500 rpm reduction if you can find a mx6 or 626 tranny. You'll see here and at other sites some info on more exotic swaps, but the above is the easy route. Personally I had a smooth shifting mx3 tranny and chose to just replace the 5th gear set. FWIW I gained a 300 rpm reduction from my stock 1992 mx3 trans. Maybe someone has a set of these used for cheap, but admit I just ordered the gear set from an online Mazda parts dealer. I changed the set with the transmission in the car. You'll have to drain trans fluid and I had to drop the trans a little bit by loosening the center support bolts so the whole engine / trans sagged a bit lower. This was to allow clearance to remove the outer most trans cover to access the 5th gear set. Be safe with at least a floor jack under the center support - and of course the car itself supported by jack stands. Parts needed:
5th Gear #1
(Primary Shaft gear)
PART NUMBER - G560-17-611C
5th Gear #2
(Secondary Shaft gear)
G514-17-308
You can also replace the lock nuts:
Primary Shaft Lock Nut
F520-17-628
Secondary Shaft Lock Nut
G501-17-629A
5th Gear #1
(Primary Shaft gear)
PART NUMBER - G560-17-611C
5th Gear #2
(Secondary Shaft gear)

My vote: Move the Transmission Section.
Lots of good info here. Personally I like the shorter gear set MX-3 trans. I dont drive long distances(60+ miles a day) in my mx-3 and spend almost all of my time on the highway. Being able to effortlessly move through traffic without slamming it into 4th is good for me.
And on topic, the only KL chassis in the yards here in Austin are 626's. Most have TONS of miles on them. The other like chassis are all 4cly's or automajics...
