In my economics class in college I learned that american cars after 1994 were made to last 7 years after 7 years they were made to mechanically have failures to help the economy by having people go to mechanics more or buy a new car. Oh and NOT all American cars suck just the newer ones I will never own a domestic just because of the reputation and because of personal experiences, my next car will either be a honda or a toyota probably a toyota.

my problem is with Cavaliers falling apart. Here is the list of stuff my mother-inlaws car had within one year (it's a 1997, automatic four door):
1. Radio display went - then two weeks later it shorted, and I had to pull it out so it wouldn't blow fuses.
2. Fuel lines rusted out
3. Fuel tank went because it was letting in water and rusting out from the inside
4. Fuel injectors just stopped working
5. Brake pads started squeeling before they were even done (still had over 70% left on em)
6. Calipers seized (two one month, then the rest at the end of the summer - the drums)
7. Parking brake seized.
8. Dash cracked and started peeling up
9. Cloth on doors started peeling off
10. cloth on ceiling fell off
11. seats ripped at seems
I think the only thing I liked about the car is the engine still hasn't gone (just been doing regular maintence).
Tranny needed some work but wasn't that bad. Definetly makes a neon look a lot better..............

I started hating GM eversince they stopped making the Camaro and Trans Am.
Not just that, the fact that they made the new GTO so damn ugly, as well as the Pontaic GTP (which is incredibly f---ing slow) and as to how they ended up making Colbats.
Also, it seems to me that Sunfires are getting awful ratings from everywhere.
Also, what is up with them putting the name "Z28" along with the Cavaliers? I thought that was a Camaro only thing?

You wont buy a domestic because of the reputation but you own a MX3? A Mx3 which has a rep for having a failing automatic tranny after 100,000 miles, a water pump that stops working at about 80k miles, front axel that stops working at about 90k miles, a altenator and distributetor that stop working at 90k miles and some vacum leak problem somewhere near the fuel pump?cdngrl420 wrote:In my economics class in college I learned that american cars after 1994 were made to last 7 years after 7 years they were made to mechanically have failures to help the economy by having people go to mechanics more or buy a new car. Also, a MX3 that shares the same engine/parts as Ford Probe's and Ford Escort's?
How long has Ford owned most of Mazda again? Anyone know? Last time I heard, they owned 80% of Mazda but that was in 2003 I believe.

If you want a gm sport compact I wouldn't mess with one that isn't equipped with an ECOTEC motor.
Yeah, the name might be propaganda, but how many people remember the article about the turbocharged RWD Cobalt Chevrolet released for the drag circut? Over 500 wheel horsepower with 60% stock internals. That motor has definate potential IMO. Plus Lisa Kubo is driving the drag ION for Saturn so there's some eye candy attatched too....

Actually i'm sure most of the parts are Mazda that are shared with Ford, no the other way around. I will agree with the shitty autos. I replaced my waterpump with my ZE swap at 141'000kms, and it was dying. Axles i replaced them aboth at about 120'000kms. Alternator acted up for a few weeks a few months ago, but decided to fix itself, its still the original alternator with 200'000kms, Fuel pump was original and works fine and replaced and upgrade when i put in a new tank. Vacuum leaks...none that I know of, but then again, rubber hoses will wear out over time. You wont buy a domestic because of the reputation but you own a MX3? No cars is perfect, for that is a fairly short list, espcially, even though I experienced those problems as you descriped, you must also take into effect that my car was 10year old when I bought it 3+ years ago...and that car that experienced Canadian winters though all it's life except for last and this year. That, and did nor do I "go easy" on the Mx-3, I treat it like the sports car i make it to be, and I'm super-impressed with how much it can take it, with minimal complaints/problems.
I can almost guarantee you that cavaliers will encouter twice the problems in half it's life as compared to an Mx-3, but the only benefit are it's parts are dirt cheap, especially compared to an Mx-3, and most people just use them to get from A to B...here on this site, we're enthousiasts of your cars, and I'm quite positive that the large majority of us don't baby our cars.
-Cheap build quality
-Poor/no eugonomics of the interior (seat/pedals/controls)
-Unreliable engine (something on the head goes at about 150'000kms on the hi-output non-ecotech engines, but I dont remember what)
-On the newer models, the radio is integrated into the wiring harness so an aftermarket deck in a PITA
-Manual transmission is horrible, hard to shift, and isnt' presice, and doesn't have a tach but a stupid "shift" light
-The older ones with the 3.1 v6, my boss replaced his engine 3 times, a co-worker twice.
-Significant wind noise even sub-highways speeds, sounded like a door wasn't close properly, it was that bad.
It's been too long, if i remember more, I'll post them

and you think that completely redesinging cars are creating a rotary wasn't tryin a new thing? And, rotary's are a success. Also, another big thing is imports hold value, domestics don't as i mentioned before.fieromx3 wrote:they werent successful cars but they were tryin new things unlike other manufacturers.
And about the Cobalt, yeah its a nice fast car and all...but I'm possitive you could do more with 30 000 dollars. You could buy a used 350z, maybe a used rx-8 if your lucky, a mint condish rx-7. W/e man its your choice, and i shuoldn't judge the cobalt because i've never driven on before.

There really isnt anything worng with cavaliers/sunfires.
It's really just a hit and miss with cars. Some cars are lemons, some arent.
My BF has had his one 97 cavalier for 3 years. It has 338 000km on it and he beats it to hell. All he has done since he bought it, was replace the engine at 275 000km, he's put in one cv axle, thats it. Other than just maintenance. They are great cars.
Its a great car for commuting, great gas mileage. But the interior is hurting. It does look cheap, but alot of the newer vehicles look like that too. Car companies I think, are getting cheap these days, on the way they build vehicles.

im just going for the cobalt because no one here has 1. there are 2 vipers, 2 350zs, 2 or 3 rx7s, 2 rx8s, like i just want to have something that no one else has. id love to have any one of those cars but i also want to be original. they have the new solstise comming here in january and they have 11 people wanting it. i just wanna be the guy that has the cobalt ss supercharged. they are a nice car and a very fun car to drive and my bro works at gm so i get parts dirt cheap. an oil filter costs $2.00 i cant go wrong. and well with me at ford they dont have anything that i like ( that i can afford). if i had $50 000 id be all over the new shelby gt 500 in a heart beat but i cant so im going with something that has warranty, cheap on parts, and will last me a few years. thats all and well i might still keep the mx3 im not sure. i ll either keep it or sell it and get a 65 chevy flareside truck and put a 572 in it i dont know but i just need something that im not throwing my money into. like all the repairs i have gone through in the past year alone is enough for me. i ve gone through 2 motors, 3 trannies, struts, springs, 2 axels, timing belt, water pump, clutch. i love the car but would you spend just about $8000 in repais on your mx3 or would you rather spend that money on a newer vehicle with warranty and dont have to worry if something breaks becasue someone else is paying for it? so thats why im getting it and not the rx 7 orrx or any of the other cars you mentioned.
95 rs with custom short ram air, b&m short throw shifter, probe 2.0L header with 2 1/4" exhaust all the way back, catco high flow cat, apc high flow muffler with 4.5" tip, accel 8 mm wires, blaze red, cf altezzas, gun metal 17" mr7s, slotted cross drilled rotors on the way with hawk hps pads, red and white interior, other then that its stock.
