Yup, the flashing hold light indicates there is a problem with the tranny....., more often than not this is terminal (or expensive!), check your fluid level first though

Yeah bro. Chances are high that the tranny is about to go out on you. Have you checked the color of the tranny fluid yet?
If you fall, then get back up........Luck favors the prepared

To check the codes for the tranny there is some info in the auto FAQ

$350 sounds pretty cheap to me, i'd be a lil dubious, open it up and check the condition of the oil residue

Yup, it's screwed mate, you can either get it reconditioned, buy a reconditioned one, or swap to a manual...... all will cost a similar amount.

Have you checked the codes yet?

Hmmm, i don't seem to be able to find a FAQ!

to get the codes, open the bonnet, disconnect the neg terminal for 20secs, depress the brake, near the firewall there is a lil diagnostics box, use a paper clip to jump the gnd and tat pins, switch the ignition on, the hold light should flash some codes, long flashes for the first #, short for the 2nd
There is an online manual on mx-3.com, the codes are listed in the auto section

It happens to so many mx-3 owners on here you probly wouldnt be able to count them all. Make sure your tranny is not OVERFILLED... As i can remember there are 2 notches in the dip stick, the higher two notches indicate Full and fill in the HOT zone, and the bottom two are for checking when the engine is cold. I would start the car and let it idle for a bit get it warmed up. But it usually means the tranny is in the trunk (or hatch) ..get a manual gearbox it will treat you better and last longer.
