BPT swap completed BUT problem with "cardan?"

Post by FroSTeD »

Hi! My BPT swap has been completed for a while and the motor is running really smooth!

But I still have a problem that I haven't solved yet. I tried to use the passanger side "cardan"
from a 92-93 MX-3 but it wasn't working. So I bought one from a Protege GT and the mechanic I told
me that I would need the Half Shaft with it. UAP/NAPA said when I called them that the
Half Shaft always come with the "cardan".

So I bought one, went @ the mechanic with the "cardan" in it's box and, surprise, no half shaft.

So we tried to find one and we haven't been able to find one yet. A friend sent me his GTX
half shaft with the "cardan", but the mechanic said it wasn't the good thing. We tried it
on a BP tranny lying in the garage and I noticed the half shaft was like ¾ inch too long.

I was told that I *would* be able to use Protege AWD 90 "cardans" and with that I should
not need the Half Shaft. Is that true?

So my question is, what kind of setup are you guys using with the BPT and the BP tranny?
What do I need?

I've got a 1995 RS MX3, BP tranny, BPT motor.

What do I need to solve my problem? Please HELP! I haven't drove my car with the BPT yet, neither
in the last 4 months! :(

Thanks! :crying:

are u talking about the hanger bearing?
the protege gt or escort gt has 2 shafts on the passenger side
one in about a foot long and goes into the tranny then there is a bearing that hangs off of the block then the other shaft goes into that

u need the get the small half shaft and the hanger bearing

Thanks for the translation :)

Yeah I'm looking for the small shaft.

I got this one (from the GTX)

But it is too long on the tranny side.

What I am looking for is this one (from the protege GT):

Is that really what I need?

Does anyone has one for sell? I tried to find one without success. Thanks for your help!

junkyards and bulletin boards is where you'll find it.

NAPA was almost correct as some makes have a two piece halfshaft. the actual halfshaft comes with the cv axle, and bolts to the other half of the mounting bracket that's attatched to the motor. my nissan altima was like this.

use one from a GS mx-3 thats what i used on my BP providing you have the G transmission and not the F tranny if you have the F tranny use one from a '94 or newr DOHC mx-3....

you can't use a 94+ jackshaft on a bp motor as the bolts don't line up. if you use/keep the f-series tranny, you have to use a 92-93 one piece axle.
