Something you could check is make sure all the bolts on your intake are tightened down properly. Make sure no hose as slightly slid off. Check your air filter, check your throttle body, ect. If you're going to take it to a mechanic anyways, might as well tinker around a bit to see if you can fix it ...

I would recomend purchasing what is called a 'Fail Safe' thermostat. What is THAT? How would it be fail safe? Nothing lasts forever.
