BP harness, who has actually used one?

Post by What »

Hrmmm, posted up some other thoughts in the list of gotchas, but this is about the harnesses. Who has actually used one that says 'swap it straight over'?

There are a couple of plugs different.

Fuel rail -match to bp minus one single black/orangestripe wire that I can't seem to find where it goes with all the BP stuff lying around.
AC plugs if yours didn't have it
transmission - match to G series sensors on trans
The oil sensor plug is further to the right on the SOHC 'starter harness'

I'm not 100% confident in the statement 'just use the BP harness' at the moment as everything was seemingly matched up where it should be and there was a faint electrical smell in cabin with just key on (hot components). I disconnected battery and may swap back to SOHC engine harness as something isn't right here. I haven't tried to start it yet, but don't deem it 100% safe to do so.

Uhh If you are using the BP ECU and BP Engine, then of course the BP Harness will swap DIRECTLY over and PLUG STRAIGHT IN to everything.

I am using the BP Harness, ECU, and Engine and it works just fine...

No it won't, it will not plug straight into the F series trans plugs.

Something is amiss though, I'll have to find out what.

I am using the F-Series tranny form a 1993 SOHC.

Everything plugged up for me except the reverse and neutral switch- but those are on the dash harness, not the ECU harness. (And thats was because I swapped out an auto for a manual.

what year/model was your harness from? Did you check the color code of the wires on the ECU end plugs? There is a cooked resistor in my ecu (resistors normally take a ton of heat) so I've got something out of place somewhere (perhaps grounded where it shouldn't be), or something is different with this harness. I was so tickled pink with the smell yesterday, I just left the car alone to sit by itself... in the corner.

I dunno.... looks like some differences in colors of wires, and addition/subtraction of some here and there, but I don't know for sure that things are not lining up. There was a nearly imperceivable nick on one of the wires by the ecu that it could have been resting against..

so what was your harness from?

I pulled my harness from a 90-94 Protege LX. Not sure of the exact year.

Hrmmm... I dunno, mines 93 EGT... for the hassle of trying to figure out where all the different color codes are going and if one of them was the problem, I just put in the sohc harness. SOHC ecu started to get hot quick on EGT harness as soon as the key was turned, no hotness resistor frying with the sohc back in...

Not sure if something going to a/c that my car doesn't have was switched around or what.... either way. BLAH! PITA

The bp harness should plug right in to everything, besides the fuel rail. You'll need the fuel rail harness from a bp, but other than that everything should plug in. Basically, if it doesnt fit there, it doesnt go there. You need the bp ecu also, and a you shouldnt have a problem with a 93 egt harness, if you do, your problem is elsewhere. Peace

Ok, who is using the EGT harness?

Everything pluged in where it should have, there are a lot of switched around wires and colors on the pins to the ecu that may include some grounds to switches and such that are not there on my sohc vs. the Escort. ECU also controls items inside the car, and there must be some difference between the EGT I had and the MX3. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to change slight details between years and makes.

I used the harness out of a 93 Protege LX. It was nice.

lol, yeah... for you!

It would be nice to hear from someone else who try to ran the EGT harness. Perhaps put in the FAQ - Don't put in or it will fry your ECU.

Put the SOHC harness in, started up on second turn... no smoke show from the ecu and all I changed was the harness.

Now to flush the brakes some more, put on the tires, and let it run.

It was under my impression if you go with the EGT harness you need to run the EGT ECU and everything would run fine. I thought I read something about that on the MX-3 Yahoo group...

I'm running the escort gt harness, mine was out of a 91, but a 93 really should have no difference. Everything should plug in besides MAYBE, the fuel rail. I dont see why there would be a problem, use the bp ecu, harness, and you should be straight. Why would your ecu fry?
