323/protege cam and gears

Post by marshmallow15 »

will the camtech street cam for the 323 sohc fit the b6e? here are specs for it:
camtech 1.6L 323 sohc street cam grind#2 (210 intake 210 exhaust @.050 lift .247" cam lift low-mid range 2400-6500 rpm)
same thing with 90-94 protege corksport camshaft set. specs:
90-94 protege Cork Sport peformance camshaft set
The Cork Sport performance cam set are brand new camshafts not regrinds. The specs are .352 lift and 205 duration at .050 lift for both intake and exhaust. The estimated gains on a mildy modified motor are 12 hp.
im sure these cams wont work well with f/i setups and should be swapped out for new ones. but im sure the hks miata cam gear works well with boosted and n/a setups. will this cam gear fit onto the b6e as well?
[ November 24, 2002: Message edited by: marshmallow15 ]

Cams for the 1.8L cars are not interchangeable with any of the 1.6L stuff. The cams are physically longer for the 1.8L, as the block is 22mm longer. (almost an inch)
Then youre asking if SOHC cams can fit DOHC heads?

I think you guys are being a little hard on marshmellow, the reason that a DOHC cam won't work is becasue the DOHC head uses one cam for exhaust valves and one for intake valves wheras the SOHC uses one cam for both. Just becasue someone has nice cars doesn't mean that they know everything about engines. Its better that he asks and finds out rather than being afraid of asking because someone is going to make fun of him.

another way to look at is....
DOHC 16v head has 2 cams in it:
-1 cam for intake valves(has 8 lobes on it)
-1 cam for exhaust valves (has 8 lobes on it)
-Also utilizes 2 cam gears (1 for each cam)
SOHC 16v head has 1cam in it:
-1 cam for intake & exhaust valves (has 16 lobes)
-Only has 1 cam gear
As you can see both heads have 16 valves...yes they are the same in that way, but it doesn't mean the parts are interchangable because the valves are physically positioned differently in the SOHC than in the DOHC. As for using the HKS cam gear on a custom SOHC cam shaft (check out www.gude.com) I'm not sure if that would work or not. You might want to call up Derrick @ Corksport & ask that one! I'd say it won't work because they are marked to be used as a pair on the DOHC. You could SEROUSELY screw up your timing by trying it and more than likely end up bending some valves over.

The 1.8 cams won't work in either of the 1.6's because the 1.8 is physicaly longer. The pulleys might. If your using the 1.6 DOHC, I believe the 1.6 DOHC Miata cam gears would work the best. Call Corksport. www.corksport.com
