Post by spike876 »

Ok quick question, I need to do a tune up on my mx. Are there any parts to stay away from? Any at all? Plus what oil should I use (brand/grade), it has 215, xxx on the engine.

Its a 5speed, and it has 215, xxx miles. And would it be a good idea to get high mileage oil?

Depending on how into it you want to get...

You may want to check the timing belt (depending on last change) for wear and tear. If the timing belt hasn't been changed in over 100k miles do the tensioner and pulley too.
If you do your timing belt, check the water pump too. Replace the gasket at least.
New o-rings for your fuel rail. New isolators for the engine side.
Soak the injectors in Seafoam while you have them off.
Valve cover gasket and make sure to clean/put the RTV down at the marked points in the manual.
PCV valve
If you're in a manual check the CV axle seals for leaks.
Check/fill the tranny (if manual)
Get a good look at the CV boots for cracks
Check your ball joints/tie rod ends/sway bar end links

Clean your throttle body

I have always been told oil is basically all the same you just need to change it when it is due. The biggest thing that is in those high mile oils is that they make your seals swell... Good if they are leaky but you better never go back to normal oil. As such they will stop swelling and then you might be in worst shape then when you started. High mile oil can help and hurt your car, double edge sword...

I would recommend what the bloke said above, fix the main stuff and u might not need that expensive high mile stuff

so basically u need
plugs
wires
oil change
gearbox oil change
rotor
cap
check all seals
check your timing belt and components
check serpentine belts
check radiator hoses
check pcv valve
check vacuum lines
check vics sensors, over time the plastic gets very brittle and the nipples can break easy :/
and your good! :D

Not sure where you live, I buy all my parts from Rockauto. Great selection and good prices. I live in Canada (obviously) and up here we get taken to the cleaners on every thing we buy so I order from the states. 'Standard auto parts' makes good parts.
