K8 vs KL oil pump

Post by atx_mx3 »

Buying another DE and want to put a brand new oil pump in it. I like the Toga HV oil pumps, but did not see on for the KL motors, but I see one for the k8.
My question is:
Are the 1.8 oil pumps and 2.5 oil pumps the same?

Exactly the same.

The Toga pump is basically a ripoff. All they have done is opened the case (perhaps even used cores), machined the housing a few thou to reduce side clearance, and then marked it up a bunch. It gives you a small linear increase but might grenade the pump if they machined off square or too tight.

Hmm. I figured they would use an aftermarket pump and modify it, but never investigated to see what was actually done with the pump. The Toga pump is only $125. OEM is $250.

But here is what I am trying to do.
I'm buying a 2.5 DE tomorrow morning. I would like to replace every seal and gasket on the motor(minus the Head gasket's), new timing belt/water pump and a new oil pump before I drop it in. I would LOVE to buy everything OEM....but I'm not made of money.....

where did you find the toga for 125? they're 199. Buying aftermarket oil pumps from places like rockauto and such are also over 100 dollars.

I read somewhere on PT that Mellings makes an as-good-as-oem replacement. I'm running it. I race every other weekend (when I'm home) and I've had no problems whatsoever, with a rev happy setup.

I've used Melling's pumps on boat motors(350/454/502CI) and older vehicles. They have always worked great....thanks for the info.

Have rarely ever heard of someones stock oil pump failing. Id not bother. I rebuilt my engine and just cleaned the oil pump. Thats all, no prpblems and many happy miles driven!

In fact all oil pump problems ive read about are from aftermarket brands.

Yea, I opted not to replaced the pump, motor has only 130k miles. It was super clean...and now it runs.
