Running rich enough to smoke
Running rich enough to smoke
So when it did run it ran rich enought to smoke and fail a smog. Could bad timing cause this cuz my tensioner was bad at the time now it's gone any thoughts or things to inpect while the car isn't/can't run

Re: Running rich enough to smoke
Just because the tensioner is bad wouldn’t necessarily mean the timing would be off. The Tensioner only prevents the belt from skipping it only affects the timing a very small amount if it’s really loose. If the belt had skipped the engine wouldn’t run...or it would run so poorly you would know something was wrong.
Extreme richness could be a number of things. A bad injector could be dumping fuel although when they fail they are more likely to deliver less fuel not extra. A sensor (IAT, VAF or coolant temp) could be telling the ECU that the there is more air going in than there really is...or that the air temperature is much colder than it is. Try a different VAF. Try cleaning the TB.
Have you pulled the codes? That should be the first step.

Or if you live in Australia or not America, because our MX-3's or 30x as they are called here don't show the check engine light for faults. Same for the MX6s and Probes here too.Newfie_dan wrote:he would see a check engine light unless the bulb is burnt out, I have seen that before.

We have to use LED to test with all our ECUs.wytbishop wrote:Really??? How do you know if your ECU is angry?
