Re: ‘92-‘94 MX-3 (1.8L) Alternator
Recall Campaign #56407
Dear Mazda Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Mazda Motor Inc. has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1992-1994
MX-3 1.8L models. Mazda Motor Inc. is recalling the vehicles registered in the following Provinces where large
quantities of road-salt are used in the winter months:
Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.
It has been determined that, due to the unique body shape of the MX-3 model, a solution of water and road salt
can be splashed onto the alternator. The water/road salt solution then enters a pin hole of the bus bar, through a
gap between the bus bar and the heat insulator. This causes an electrical short circuit between the bus bar and the
heat shield of the alternator. In time, this short circuit allows overheating, and in the worst case, can result in
an alternator fire in the engine compartment.
Vehicles that were equipped with an Air Conditioning System at the time of new vehicle retail are not subject
to this recall. However, this point must be confirmed at you Mazda dealer.
