DE swap - Starting issues

Post by MX-3zoom »

De motor swap.
Using old K8 parts.
I am getting fuel, spark, and air! When I go to start the car, it will crank fairly strong. Then it starts dying off slowly (crank-crank-crank-stall-pop-crank---crank---crank). I got piston one set to top dead center on combustion side. Tweaked with the disty while trying to turn it over. Nothing... So now flames and pops come out of the exhaust (they use to shoot out the intake). I've noticed j the negative battery cable gets hot while cranking. Help! Tips!

PLEEEAAAASSSEEEE!!

Thank you bornsticky! Plug wires didn't match up with the disty. Now! It fully turns over! But it runs for two seconds, then dies unless throttled hardcore. I've noticed a massive air sucking sound. My friend removed the oil cooler lines from the front and rear valve covers, and put mini air filters in its place. Could that be what's it? I know the front runs to the side of the motor- over the transmission - intersecting with the line that's runs to the intake- then to the rear cover.

Where is the air sucking sound coming from? Are you running an oil cooler because i think those lines are your pcv lines and need to be hooked up properly. Also make sure your oil cap is tight.

From the PVC pipe. They were removed and capped with filters. The line that runs off the front valve cover sucks massive air. So I guess I answered myself lol. Its going to be a pain installing it since the intake manifold is almost up to the firewall. Could that really be the issue? What other vital lines?

yea these motors dont like vacuum leaks, my old k8 would die out just pulling the oil dipstick. tap those into your intake and your set

sounds like you have major vac leak problems use a can of carb cleaner to help you find them. get that PCV system hooked up or youll destroy your engine.

I've got it sat up now...

I removed the intake manifold....bam... Coolant chilling between both heads. From the fat coolant pipe between the heads, guessing the o-ring is out. Has a four second drip.
Yay yay... Another minor set back, but I'm thankful for the forum and your guys help. I would of taken my friends word... And had to start over! Grr

Also, with the egr system removed. Will that cause a significant difference in trying to start it? With low 60 degree weather?

No it won't. I'd suggest a block heater though. lol Go over your engine and check for vac leaks. Feel and listen.

You can also use some breakcleaner, just spray it on and see if the idle changes / bubbels.

Will do. It'll be a few before I get it turned over. Quick fix on the coolant line. Definitely will do brake cleaner tip!
