another tire thread

Post by mikeinaus »

hey everyone. summer is coming and i need some new tires. being the poor student/pizza driver i am i cant afford anything too expensive. maybe $90-140max a tire.
my needs would be, a well gripping 3 season tire, comfort and road noise would be a good benefit, and the best tread life possible, for daily driving and maybe a couple auto x events (thinking of getting into it). i know im asking alot...

any ways ive narrowed it down to a few tires so far and was wondering if anyone had any input on them. i would be looking for 215/45/17's
Kumho Ecsta SPThttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes
Ventus V12 evo K110http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes
Yokohama S drive http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes
Sumitomo HTR Z III (ive read alot of great things about these tires) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... =HTR+Z+III
Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes
firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes

so far i think im leaning closer to the SPT's, or the HTR Z III's...

I would go with them in order as you have listed

Kumho - Everyone raves about them, but never owned a set myself
Ventus - I have had several sets of these (as they are cheap) and I liked them for DD
Yokohama S
Hankook

Can you not get Toyoproxes or uniroyal rainsports for that price? as I would have them over anything you have posted tbh.

tire rack doesnt seem to carry those. i was planning on buying from them... i think im going to try the sumitomos. its hard to find a bad comment about them, there asymmetrical so can be cross rotated and the only negative is they arnt the best in the rain (not as good as other high end tires anyways).

as for the uhp's they are cheap but id rather spend a little more and get that extra bit of performance. they didnt seem to review too well with tire rack either. they also dont come in the size i was looking at.

another question about 215/45/17, anyone know if they should fit without any special camber? i think i might need some spacers, especially on the rear, but was wondering if anyone had any experience with this size tire. ive seen daninski recommend it a couple times...

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

sweet never seen those charts before.

whats everyone's opinions on the Continental ExtremeContact DW? they ended up 2nd on there charts for max performance summer, are only $123 each and they come with a free e reader if i buy 4 before May. think these would be worth the extra price? over the other $100ish tires? tire rack rated there steering response and handling precision a bit lacking though...
