K8 Disty TOT57071 - electrical parts?

Post by Steve_SK »

Hello friends :)

After a long time I have probably found a problem in my MX-3's ignition system. My problem is primary coil in distributor, I've checked resistance and it is 1,6 Ohm instead of 0,85 Ohm (max). Searching the internet I've found out there are more parts in the disty than the coil and it all messed up in my head, unfortunately. :(

I need a new coil for sure, but I've also found an ignition module, is it something different or is it part of the coil? Are primary and secondary coils mounted "together" in one part? Should I change ignition module when changing coils in my disty?

The car smells of unburned fuel, oil level is OK, no bad smoke coming out the exhaust. I have new wires, new plugs, new disty cap and rotor. So I think faulty coil could possibly cause bad ignition.

Anyway, back to the question, do I have to exchange igniter together with exchanging the coil?

Thank you very much for any advice. :)

Normally, if the car runs, the distributor is fine. None of my coils are in spec, but it works fine.

both coils are one unit

The other part is the ignition module/crank angle sensors.

What is your fuel milage like?

Ryan,

my fuel mileage .. when I drive normally - shifting between 2500 - 3200 rpm and driving 50 kmh, 90 kmh, or 110 kmh, my tank is empty, really empty after 400-450 km. I don't try to drive harder, fuel would run off much quicker. :(

I can feel a strong fuel smell coming out of the exhaust. I also have starting problems, it sometimes starts like an old tractor..there's a sign of start, but then the engine cranks twice more like it was running out of fuel and then starts normally, sometimes goes up to 2000 rpm and down to 700 immediatelly, sometimes just goes slowly up from 0 to 700 rpm. engine is after rebuilt, there's nothing wrong with engine mechanically, pressures are perfect, heads are done (valves, guides, plugs etc.). So I think it must be something related to ignition system or fuel system.

Thank you for answer about the coil and igniter. ;)

This is a KL?

My engine is just as new as yours, and I get the same fuel mileage, using new O2's and a KL55/KL02 combination.

I'm thinking that engine management will fix the problem.

Mine is all-stock K8, no mods, stock setup, stock filter, plugs, wires. I was told by several MX-3 K8 owners they run out of fuel after 400 km when they drive hard, with normal driving they can do 600 km without problem.

My O2 are old, front one is original from 1993, rear one is Bosch replaced 4 years ago, I had really serious oil burning problem (1 liter per 300-400 km), and that problem was present last 50k kms.

So I need to replace everything, I think. O2's, cat, coil, igniter, wires maybe..

Well, it was a bad idea to only replace one O2. Would you replace just one spark plug?

it was a bad idea to buy this car back in 2006, to be honest :) i did not have that much money to buy two new sensors, only one was faulty. parts here are way more expensive than in the States or Canada :(

Do the thermosensor test on this page, and the next page.

Also do the TPS reset thing here: http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=47561

Check that the fuel rail plugs (2) are fully engaged (plugged in). Mine did that when one plug wasn't contacting. Your TOT57071 is a really old disty. In 93 they changed to the 072 disty. A little better built I was told.

Daninski: I've checked fuel ramps connectors twice, they're connected tight and made that "click" sound when connected.

You're absolutely right my disty is very old, I believe it is the first version of this kind of distributor, that's why I want to exchange all internal parts, because I think 18-years old coils cannot operate as good as new. 072 disty has different "architecture" with ignition module separated from the rest (only a small part inside the disty) and better cooled (afaik). I'd like to keep everything genuine, no mods. I'll try to buy new coil(s) and ignition module and see what happens then. Maybe a new set of wires would be a great idea too.

Please, is there any way to check ignition module in distributor? I can easily disassemble it, but I'd like to know how to check if it is within specs or not. :) I've checked coils and they're bad, so it would be great to know if a new module is required in my disty. Thank you!
