Possible strut mount problem?
started hearing a "clunk" sound from the back shocks yesterday, the shocks themselves seem fine as i get a decent amount of resistance when pushing down on the back end (im 6'2" ~260 lbs so a decent amount of weight lol). I gave the springs a once over to make sure they weren't snapped as ive had that happen in the past, could it be the strut mounts?

Re: Possible strut mount problem?
There are many things that it could be. First make sure all the lugs are tight.
Check the wheel bearings in the rear by lifting the wheel just off the pavement and trying to rock the wheel backa nd forth and up and down. The rear wheels don't articulate at all so there should be zero play in the wheel.
Make sure you haven't snapped a sway bar end link.
Check that the trailing arms are tight at the body and the spindle.
Check that the lateral links are tight at the subframe and the spindle.
Check the bushings where the sway bar attaches to the subframe. You may have had a bushing desintegrate.

Re: Possible strut mount problem?
so slipped under the car, didn't see anything broken, no snapped links, just the regular grime. checked all the lugs before jacking up the car, all seemed well...
started jacking up the driver rear and watched in shock as the well... shock... wobbled around inside of the spring

so yeah... bushings were fine =P

Re: Possible strut mount problem?
so picked up a set of spring compressors from princess auto and headed off to pnp to pick up some not so rusted mounts (figured i may as well replace both sides) the 2 that i pulled had a bit of superficial rust on them but not remotely as bad as the ones in my car. spent the afternoon ripping my shocks out and putting the new mounts in (gave them a blast of rust inhibitor before putting them in)
anyways, new mounts are in and the nasty clunk sound is long gone, car runs nice and smooth again
so here's a couple of pics of the driver side that was just rotted right out

and a pic of the new one installed

total cost of the whole fix was $24 for the spring compressors, $21 and change for 2 mounts, no complaints here, will probably be a bit before i use the compressors again but new tools are always fun to have
also, when i was at pnp, they had this old butchered datsun 240 for sale
