Ignition switch will not turn/ button will not depress

Post by maciveli00 »

Just hoping for a quick fix here on a 1993 MX-3 GS. The key will not turn sometimes because the button that lets the key out will not depress when key is inserted. A friend told me there is a golden piece in the ignition that if removed will allow the ignition to function properly. Is this true and if so how do I do this, or is there a simpler way? It will start sometimes when the button chooses not to interfere. Thank you for reading and maybe some of you pros can help an upstart like me save some cash.

I have no idea what you're talking about, there is no button, but try wiggling the steering wheel back and forth as you try to turn the key.

Newer Mazdas, I know for a fact the Mazda3 does have this Key-lock button on the column that holds the key in the ignition and only "lets go" when the button is pressed. However it won't affect the car starting; the car will start with the key in the ignition, and don't if it's not, ironicly, lol.

If you're having a hard time turning the ignition to start the car where it feels like it's stuck, literally giggle the wheel back and forth while gently turning the key, it'll eventually just pop in. Both my Mx-3 and my parents 626 experienced this odd quirk.
