how cold is your AC?

Post by ninjajim4 »

i am just trying to get a sense of whether or not this is just my car or not, but my AC sucks. if i'm on the highway doing 60 it's fine. if i'm stuck in traffic then it is hot as hell, literally.

i've gotten it refilled and even gone so far as to pay a ridiculous amount for a remanned compressor thinking that would help, but if it's 90 degrees out i'm not driving this car, period. it's too light for a winter car, which means it's pretty much a spring and fall car right now, which means it's good for approximately 5 days out of the year here in Chicago.

i know some of you guys take your AC out altogether along with your power steering, but i am a creature of comfort. i feel like this car is not worth owning right now because i so seldom want to drive it. if the AC were up to par i would definitely put it in my DD rotation

I have the same issue.. As long as my car is driving, the AC blows cold. If I'm sitting at a light, then it does nothing besides turn off and on every 5 seconds which drives me nuts. I know there is a problem with my system though.. I think I need to swap compressors and drain and refill the system.

In your case, you could need a new condenser (in front of rad). Someone once told me that the condenser isn't working right if your AC only works while rolling... Look online for more answers. AC is a tricky thing

Mine barely works. I need to look at it, but I don't get hot enough to care.

i would check out the evaporator and make sure it isnt plugged or half plugged. the evaporator is the unit located inside the car buried inside the dash. i just cleaned mine and fixed a few leaks, had some faulty o rings, and recharged mine. i converted to r134 and put 2 ounce of oil into pump and charged it. i ran it 2 ounces short on freon and it works great no matter what rpm the engine is at. r12 and r134 have didnt compression ratios. r134 actually occupies more space when compressed then r12 hence less charge. hope this helps.

Good sugeestion motorcycle man..

How did you go about cleaning it? Did you take it apart then take the unit out and clean it?

Also, how often is your compressor cycling, like turning on and off? Mine keeps switching back and forth and its a real pain, even though apparently its not low on 134

typically short cycling like that means it's running low but also could be due to be OVERfilled. mine short cycles too, but only after it's been running for a prolonged period of time. i can't find anyone who can tell me why that is.

you know.. this is something i was just looking at... i believe my AC fan is working but the radiator fan never seems to come on. but then again, the car never overheats or anything. you guys think this would have an impact?

I believe both fans come on when the AC is turned on, if anything it's the AC fan that should be intermittent.

Mine is as cold as an Arizona heatwave. Gotta love good quality AC...

I guess it's a good excuse to drive with the windows down... which I would do even if it did work.

Just had my MX-6 compressor replaced and even tho it blows kinda cold it's still not that great. R134a is IMO is pretty crappy stuff. Dosn't compare to R12 so I'm considering using that aftermarket stuff in my 92 as it hasn't been retrofitted to 134a yet. If you paid to get your A/C serviced and your not happy go back and tell them. The charge may be incorrect, did he install a new dryer and are both the evaporator and condenser fins clean.

i don't think that's true. i believe the AC fan is supposed to on anytime the AC button is pressed. true or not?

judging from all the responses, i guess i am not alone and this is probably the best i can expect...

Take it back it should be working a lot better than your talking about. The freon quantity might be wrong. The factory manual should say what the temp coming out of the vent should be, check that out.
