How should the VAF be oriented?

Post by cout »

Read this on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_flow_sensor):
The vane meter approach has some drawbacks:

* it restricts airflow which limits engine output
* its moving electrical or mechanical contacts can wear
* finding a suitable mounting location within a confined engine compartment is problematic
* the vane has to be oriented with respect to gravity.
If the vane has to be oriented with respect to gravity, then does that mean that I have a problem?

Obviously with this cold-air setup, the VAF is *not* oriented with respect to gravity. Should I re-orient it?

Also what happens if the driver drives up a hill?

It should be oriented horizontally. Or as close to stock location as possible

Gravity in theory would affect the rate of opening of the vane in that orientation. I don't think it's extremely critical, but it would be best if it didn't have to fight gravity to open. My personal opinion is that it's fighting against the return spring to open anyway and the weight of the vane is very small compared to the spring rate fo the return spring.

I doubt it will make any difference for what you are doing.
