Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
Ok this might sound a silly question but i was wondering..
Can this miata engines,Bp-4w and Bp-z3 fit in mx3 rs?
As far as i know bp4w makes 140hp and bpz3 makes 147hp!!!
Bp4w was 1999-2000 and bpz3 was 2001-2005
Thank you..

The problem is fitting this:

into this:

If it gives you an idea of the headache required its a start

So with a few words it can't be fit...

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
Oh you can put the miata engine in, its just a very painful and involved process.
Look at where the MX-3 motor mounts to the frame on the passenger side then
note where the miata engine coolant feed is for example.

Do you know what exactly modifications should be done in the mounts?
Or do you know anyone who has done this swap?

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
It can be done if you know what parts to change out. Its easier with the 94-98 miata bp swap parts from a FWD BP to get the job done. example intake manifold, windage try, oil pan, thermostat housing, installing a freeze plug, valve cover, side motor bracket the list goes on. All that crap its just a headache if you have no idea what you are doing.DeadMaker wrote:I think i will pass through..Too much modification and headache

The BP's you choose Bp-4w and Bp-z3 would require making a custom intake manifold since these newer bp's have a redesign intake side reason why for the extra HP you seem to be interested in. Along with some kind of EMS to control VVT on the z3. Trying to make this work is a whole different story.
Hope this helps to your wondering.

It might be easier with the 94-98 miata bp swap but this engines didn't have the VICS until 1999.So in this case is better to take a protege engine.Limegreen mx-3 wrote:It can be done if you know what parts to change out. But i am wondering why the intake manifold can't fit and need a custom? In this case a protege manifold would work?(but with lossless power if it fits)
In any case if it so headache with miata engines i will try to find a a bp protege(So Fu**ng difficult to find here this motors)
That's why i am asking for miata..
Thanks

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
if its the regular BP (1st gen miata) then its basically the same. The manifolds are different because of the RWD set up. They point the wrong directions. A few other things are different too... other members know better than me.

someone has been reading Wikipedia so explain why my brother 97 Miata is equipped with VICS.DeadMaker wrote:bp engines didn't have the VICS until 1999
94-98 miata BP have the same exhaust and intake bolt pattern of that of a FWD BP that is why u can use a fwd intake manifold on a RWD bp that is being converted to a FWD BP. done the swap to know the answer.
The custom intake manifold is for trying to convert a 99 bp because in 99 the bp is almost the same the difference being using solid lifters a more aggressive cams, higher compression and have a different angle on the intake ports. Putting a FWD intake manifold on the 99+ bp's will not line up with the intake ports but find out the hard way. reason for a custom fwd intake manifold.
where do u get these ideas fromDeadMaker wrote:(but with lossless power if it fits)

Yes i have been reading Wikipedia..
Now, are you sure that your brother had 97 miata??
What exactly swap have you done? You put miata engine to mx3?

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
ok, first of, the pic you posted is NOT a BP miata. that is a 90-93 miata which used the B6 engine, not the
BP he is looking for.
second, 97 miatas DID NOT have VICS, only started in 98-99 (NB or 2nd gen)
3rd, the head off the 99 will bolt up to ANY BP engine, in fact, it's a very commong upgrade in the miata
community. no need for "custom intake manifolds" as long as you have a BP intake.
4th, just get a BP off the protege's, they are pretty much a bolt-on affair.

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
Im starting to wonder if u have ever compared a 99+ bp head to a reg. 94-98 bp head the intake bolt patterns are the same but the intake ports will not line up. god i wish i had a pic to show what i mean. i mean using a fwd setup not a rwd setup for the IM i mean. aren't u have some issues with ur IM for ur B6T head and ur B6 DE IM isn't working with ur B6T head like u thought it would.MapaX5 wrote:ok, first of, the pic you posted is NOT a BP miata. that is a 90-93 miata which used the B6 engine, not the

You are right about ur 3rd fact if ur dealing with a topical Miata setup but not the case its dealing with a fwd setup and a fwd protege IM will not work with a 99 head. if ur dealing with a miata u won't need a custom IM.
and ur 4th fact ur right he should just go with a protege bp fa less headache.

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
HA HA HA HA LMFAO
Its like everyone saying Wait you cant put AWD into an MX-3 it just cant be done! swapping the motor would definatly come with some headache. but its fairly straight forward. by modifying the bolt patterns on the IM you can get it to line up and bolt on. if i remember rite you might have to dremel the ports over alittle as well. worst case cut the flanges off of both IM's find a local aluminum welder have him match the ports up and weld the new flange on the old IM, it will probably cost you 50 to 100 bucks.

Re: Mazda miata Engine to mx3 rs?
josh yeah i remember hearing a lot of that too...
you can take a miata engine and put it in no problem.... it is easier to pick up a 1994-98 one since the manifolds are easily swapped. you also need to switch the side the thermostat goes on and i believe the oil pan also
i think the 99 and up ones should still swap over as easy as the earlier but the intake manifold would be a slight problem but the inake shouldn't be too hard to deal with and solid lifters would be a sweet upgrade, and you could build a better intake also, i may look into swapping in the 4w myself later.
lime, the miata community does swap to the 4w head but they keep the 4w manifold on the head when they swap it in.
mike how could you seriously think turning the engine from lengthwise to transverse would be an issue?! our b6 and the miatas b6 is almost the same exact engine just a couple minor changes.
