1.6 to 1.8BP Conversion Questions

Post by Daninski »

OK People we have a referalled Newbie here. Can anyone help with these questions or point him to a FAX on this. Thanks Daninski.

Hey, I was appointed to this site, and you by jschrauwen. I am really thinking about taking my 1.6L DOHC 4cyl stdnrd ouf my 96 M-X3 RS. There is a 1.8 BP motor out of a 93 Escort Gt that I am looking to put in. jschrauwen said to talk to you about it because you are local and know more about it them him.
some questions I have are:
are all the motor mounts going to line up with the ones in my bay?
am i able to use the wiring harness from my car for it?
am i able to use the ECU from my car for it?
and should i use my existing Tranny for the motor too?
and any other things you can think of that i might need to get or do?

Any help would be greatly appreiciated.
Chris.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

The only thing I may be able to answer is your 96 is OBD2 so the exhaust manifold may be different. You may have the O2 sensor in the manifold and below it in the exhaust pipe an O2 monitor sensor. You can omit the O2 monitor sensor if you want to. Other than that I'm not sure.

stay away from all the electrical from the 96.

The colour code on the 96 wiring harness is way off and the ecu is a lost cause. Replace everything.

Yes, but you must use the tranny mount from the EGT.
am i able to use the wiring harness from my car for it?
According to RS_OBD'oh_2, no.
am i able to use the ECU from my car for it?
No. Use the one from the EGT.
and should i use my existing Tranny for the motor too?
No again. Use the EGT tranny.
and any other things you can think of that i might need to get or do?
Search. Sorry, don't know what else may be different off the top of my head, as I've never seen a 96 in person. I'd say if something looks too different, swap it for the EGT part.

I had to use the lower tranny mount, the front motor mount, and the upper tranny mount from the BP/G series tranny. The only one that worked the same is the one on the passenger fender.
Took the bp+t out of the mx and swapped it into a 95 escort wagon. ;)

You may be right. I re-read my swap thread, but I didn't write anything about the motor mounts. Can't remember, it was many years ago.

From what everyone says, the b6 to bp swap is the easiest. Im still in the middle of mine, but I didnt do just that, Im also doing a bp26 turbo set up and using an RX-7 VAF (which needs tuning).

My set up consists of
BP26 ECU
RX-7 VAF
330 cc Injectors
SOHC Protege wiring harness and fuse box.
4 Wire TPS

So itll take a little tunning before Im hittin the streets.

Just remember, you primarily want to use the same VAF, ECU and Wiring harness from the same car. If you can get them all from the EGT, you should be all set (plug and play).

Not very high with the stock bp26 turbo. Probably around 180hp.

That's not bad for a stock setup...

Where'd you get the ecu?

JDM BP26 GTX ECU, overnight parts from JAPAN.

Got it off a guy on clubprotege. They go for about $125-150 +- shipping.

Stock JDM Familia GTX is rated for 180hp at the crank at 7.9psi.

Figure with the small add ons I should see about that to the wheels.
