rotary again

Post by Robx1r »

Well i may as well put it up here yo see if i can get advice,
This is my car a 93 1.8 v6 mx3 (with the original dirt that came on it)
Image

i've decided to go and stick a 13b into it using a mix of mx5 running gear NOT like that monstroaity that used rx7 gear which was too wide and complicated

now from my research the rear track of the mx3 is 20mm wider than the mx5 being 1428mm so shouldnt cos too much trouble i've yet to confirm the lengthe of the mx5 driveshaft/gearbox and i was going to get the munting frame for the engine from a rotary aircraft and weld it on my existing subframe(if possible) and mate the mx5 gearbox to a non turbo 13b hopefully an older one thats very simple in regards to wiring!

my thought on the "major" things are
modifying the subframe to accept a 13b (and make it look nice)
cut out the tranmission tunnel and make a new one! (not gonna be that hard just need a sheet of steel)
remove the petrol tank and fit a fuel cell inside the car (was planning on doing that anyway)
i cant think of anything else at the moment but feel free to add to this list

now the questions i have the i cant find answers (i know where the search button is )
where exactly are the engine mounting points on a 13b
will the 13b definatly fit the 5 gearbox
any other suggestion on a rotary engine?

I'm already on the look out for the following parst locally
Mx3 subframe
mx5 rear axle (hubs carriers, lcas, driveshafts, diff)
mx5 gearbox
any advice is welcome

I don't think many have tried this, and I've never really looked into it. thats TOO custom for me.

#1 lose the wing, that thing looks like a batmobile. But then again, its your car.

I cant think why a rotary would fit any of the Miata motors.

Miatas have only ever ran

B6, BP(4W and Z3) and BPT, all which won't fit a rotary gearbox...

and then MZR which is used for lots of things... and I don't know if it shares trannies with rotaries. I doubt it though. They were only made together in the early 2000's. Say, 2 or 3 years of overlap, in entirely different cars, with entirely different engines....

I would be VERY surprised if they fit. The geometry doesn't even match. rotaries have the drive shaft dead centre in the motor, wheras the I4's in the miata have it at the bottom...

1st gen miata motor... b6 or BP... I vote BP.

Keep the wing, it looks fine ;)

You can search all you want, but all the questions you have aren't Mx-3 related, so you more likely not find what you're looking for on here.

Robx1r wrote: where exactly are the engine mounting points on a 13b
You can't find those answers because there is almost no rotary information here. You'd have to ask Rx7 guys for 13B information.

Robx1r wrote:will the 13b definatly fit the 5 gearbox
Ask the Miata guys, we can't answer that, we don't use 13B's or Miata gearboxes...but for what I have found, apparently they do fit if you use the N/A 13B on 1st gen Miata trans, but you may want to do ALOT of research on that, but you would always just get an 13B trans too...

Robx1r wrote:any other suggestion on a rotary engine?
You're more likely getting in over your head...don't do it would be my suggestion.

Good luck. It's not as simple as you think it is

use the rx7 tranny.

but really i say screw the rotary..... if i were to build a rwd mx3 it would either be rear engine klze or it would have a full miata drive train, 1.8 heavily boosted. i dont like the rotary it scares me to think of what could go wrong.

Or you could try the Miata V8 conversion and put that into an MX-3. hahaha....

:2thumbsup: I say go for it, If you have the time and $$ and can do alot of the work yourself. I have thought about this type of swap as well. I love rotaries
Like you said, bang out a tranny/driveshaft tunnel, ditch the stock tank for the fuel cell.

The 2 motor mounts pretty much are lined up with the center steel.
um...If you are looking at a 13b sitting in the engine bay of an rx-7 from the front/pullies side, the motor mounts would be on the left and right sides of the motor inline with the center steel, and the trans mount is back on the trans.

I would try to use a turboII trans if you could, they are pretty beefy.
Driveshaft would probably have to be custom, not sure if a miata or rx-7 would work (length wise etc..)

A standalone EMS will be the easiest way to get it all running/wired up.

Are you looking to go NA or stock turbo/twins, big single with it? I would recommend the super blacks (RA super apex seals) if you are going to re-build the motor first.

I have thought about this type of project too, would love to see it done nicely.

I'd be more interested in seeing if someone could get the 2JZ swap kit for the Probe GT to fit in an MX3, that would be something. If I had a decent amount of money lying around I'd definitely love to try to get that to work, those Probes are running 9s and so are 2JZ S2000s.

thats the right attitude there, i'd be goin na to keep the electrics simple
its no problem sorting out the wiring from the clocks as the na rotars have f--- all in them so all it'll be is the tacho and water temp to worry about as i've already simplified my wiring loom!

I guess if you just want something unique...but n/a, really? Seems like a waste. I'd rather turbo a b6 w/ stock internals.

If you're gunna go rwd at least put some power to it...

heres my thinkin on it an na 13b with ancillarys will weigh bout >250kg
the k8 weighs bout 500 (not 100% on that but OFC)

you can get 200-220 out of the na 13b with so little work and next to no cost

so my car will weigh in close to the 800 850kg with say 200 bhp at the hubs its enough for me

With all the materials required to put a driveline in you won't be saving much weight.
