Dark_Rider's Worklog- 1992 MX3 BP Swap Journal (Swap done!!)

Post by Dark_Rider2k3 »

Cardomain Site:
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2595921" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

First off, got the car a while back.. umm.. I think it was July 2006. Paid 2,800 for it with 105,000 miles on it. Nothing wrong at all.. so it was a steal :D. The car now has 129,000 miles on it.

List of modifications:

Performance:
KYB struts with H&R springs.
NGK Iridium plugs and NGK blue wires.
N1 Muffler tip (though.. i really need a custom cat-back made).
Ebay cold air intake.
FX Combat side skirts
V6 Alternator swap
RX7 VAF swap

Aesthetic
GS Spoiler installed
Ebay Steering wheel with Momo adapter
Power Window swap
Valve cover painted

Audio:
Alpine CDA-9856 Deck
Q-Logic dual sub enclosure
Rockford Fosgate Amp
Dual Memphis 12-inch subs
Dual front speakers (crappy but I got them for free and they are better then stock).

I used to have:

Q-logic dual sub enclosure
Infinity Reference 12-inch subs
Sony Xplod 1500W amp

but that was stolen >_>... so my car audio isn't the best right now :crying:

I will update this more but I have to get ready for work.. will try and get some pictures but.. I have tons on my CarDomain site... just take a look!

Another update:

Got to looking at the BP on my dads truck to snap photos, and also removed the headers. Might install them in place of my stock headers, but still unsure of that one.

Also got the engine hoist partially set up. Didn't have time to finish installing it (got a great hoist from Harbor Freight for about 140 bucks.. it's hydraulic and is pretty impressive.

Tomorrow the engine is coming out of the crate and will be on the hoist in my family's spare garage. I'll get some pics of it then but I do have some shots I'm uploading to photobucket (and I'll edit this post with 'em)

A shot of the Headers from the BP. Should I install 'em or leave them with the BP for now?

Hey man, nice clean engine.

I saw that in the FS and was impressed. You got a good deal there.

If you need any help, feel free to PM me. I did that swap just a few weeks ago. Full rebuild too.

I'd leave the header off because you'll want it off for the engine install. Thats one of the last things to go on before you start her up :)

Just out of curiosity, why would you change the header anyway? (I know its just an exhaust manifold, but I call it a header.) They are the same...

Okay so I'm sitting in class and planned out my "To Get" list. Tell me what you think:

BPT Cams
Pistons
B6T Rods
Camshaft Gear set
Flywheel
Clutch
Stainless clutch line
short shifter
Timing Belt
Serpentine Belts
Oil/Water pump
Spark plugs/Wires
Distributor
BP Wiring Harness (figure it would be easy and eliminate the all the plugs for the automatic)
Themostat
Engine and Transmission Mounts
Vaccum Lines
Any (and all) Gaskets/Hoses

Then after that, I'll start working on the Manual tranny.

Then I'll get Megasquirt, and then work on getting the turbo and other goodies.

You can buy entire gasket kits and waterpump/timing kits. You also might want to consider head work if you're doing all of that, fresh springs/valves/retainers and maybe some cams and finish her all off with some good quality race rings meant for boost....

You can buy vac line by the foot, its real cheap.

Okay here are some things I found. Tell me what you think please:

Gasket Set:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-97-1- ... 0151463815" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I couldn't find a water pump/timing kit for the earlier models but I found one for a '94

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-04-Ma ... 0010r13294" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cams:

http://www.integralcams.com/miata.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I couldn't find any good rings.. just this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/94-05-MA ... 9002r18129" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As for the springs/retainers and such.. where do I look for that? I don't know what to google search LOL

Edit:

and I just saw corksport has complete head kits!!! 'doh!

(and.. it looks like i got a LOT of saving up to do :shock: )

Yeah, building motors like these are expensive :D Shoulda bought a Honduh!

Miata head components... 1st gen 1.8 miata that is, those kits will work.

Ebay is seeming rather empty when it comes to these, eh? Might have to look off of ebay. importperformace, miata sites, cork...

So today I installed a MUCH sturdier chain to replace the bunches of chains i had. So now 1 really strong chain is holding it up.

I also started removing stuff. Not a lot but the basic crap:

Got the valve cover off. The gasket was shot.

Image

Here are the pulleys. I do not know how to remove them though. Anyone have advice?

Image

The timing belt:

Image

Any tips on this for a guy who's never messed with a timing belt. I know I can't get to it until i've removed the pulleys, but what is "marking" the belt and stuff...

edit:

I also am removing the intake mani to clean it up

Nevermind on the question, I got it. Though, 2 new ?'s:

1. What size is that lower pulley's bolt (the center bolt)

2. Can the upper portion of the intake manifold come off from the lower end (the upper portion that is connected to the throttle body)? I tried removing it but I could get it lol. Maybe i'm doing something wrong =/
