Um, is this car worth keeping?

Post by Xucifer »

I have a black '92 GS with about 170,000 miles on it (270,000 km) and I'm considering getting rid of it. I got it for $900 in US bucks and, at this point, it's pretty wrecked. This was my first car so I'm kind of heartbroken. I'm not quite sure how much it would cost to fix it and, being in college, I have little money.
Please, suggestions? :(
Here's what's wrong...
- needs new rotors, calipers, oxygen sensors, and throttle position sensor
- front drive shaft snapped
- sunroof doesn't close
- vertical dent down passenger door and bullet hole which knocked out rear speakers
- passenger side auto belt doesn't work
- cigarette lighter doesn't work and seems to blow headlight fuses...
- trunk lock is stuck; needs new cargo cover
- center console and ashtray lid missing
- rear seat covers ripped and the chintzy plastic on the interior is coming loose
- exterior needs major work too -_-
Er, and, right now, I'm not legally allowed to drive it...
I'm not sure what to do - should I fix it, junk it, sell it (I hate to rip someone off), or just keep it as this trashy ghetto car? How little do you think it's worth?
Is repair even a possibility? I'm sorry; I would really really appreciate feedback.
Thanx a lot. <=)
~ Eva
[ September 13, 2002: Message edited by: Xucifer ]

Damn, that is pretty ragged, but from what you said it doesn't really need much mechanically. How does it run with the sensor problems?
And WTF have you been doing in that car?!? A bullet hole!?! Exterior all wrecked!?! Not legal to drive?!? Come on 'fess up to it, we're all dying to hear the stories!

I guess it does have a fugitive from the law thing going on. O.O
Hehe, my life isn't anywhere near as exciting as that looks ^_^
I haven't ever raced or mod it out - I always thought of the faithful little clunker as more of an...escort car, I guess.
Well, I used to have a job delivering papers, and the unfortunate dent on the door came when I misjudged some distance and swung into a mail post. I know, bummer -_-.
And apparently, my front left CV shaft got sliced when I was trying to drag a wagon full of plant crap up this hill in the woods(we're kind of country here). Whatever. Didn't know until I got my wheels aligned.
But a lot of the other problems aren't my fault. My car was stolen about three months ago from this Home Depot parking lot. >_< But the weird part was, when I was shopping for a new car, I saw an ad in the paper for an MX-3 so I decided to check it out. When I got there, I thought the car looked terribly familiar... As it turned out, the guy got it from a landfill (salvage yard?) and was starting to fix it up - so I paid like $300 to get my car back, all beaten and crapped up. I pouted for a month.
The poor thing still drives - I think the sensors are important mostly for emissions purposes...so, yeah, it didn't pass the emissions test -_- ...which is why it's not registered and I can't get it insured.
Smoky's (no irreverence intended =)) probably right, I should just part it out. -_- God, I love this car tho. Any idea how much the whole thing's worth?
~ Eva
Incredible! This new avatar looks a whole lot like me. O.O Except I think I'm usually happier.

So many of you here have done a hella lot to your cars - with really impressive results. ^_^
How much did it all cost? Where did you find the money?
I can't possibly be the youngest one here.
Hmmm, can I possibly sell my car here for $1000?

It sounds to me like you should try to get the sensors fixed so that you can pass emissions. If not, there's some stuff you can buy at almost any auto-parts store that is guaranteed to "help" your car pass emissions. I've never used it, and since Florida no longer has emissions testing, I probably never will, but I've heard that the stuff does work.
As long as you can get the car back on the road, that will give you enough time to save up some money so that you can buy another MX-3! That way, if you find one that has some problems, you might be able to get it for cheaper and use your old car for parts.
That was a good story though, even if it wasn't quite as dramatic as it seemed on the surface. And BTW, why did you PAY to get your own stolen car back?!?

But wait, you still didn't tell us where the bullet hole came from! Was it when it was stolen?

part it out you'll get more money than selling it whole. I know a bunch of people that are looking for parts. you could probably get three to 400 for the engine alone

I work as a referee for hockey now and I make between $20-$50 an hour depending on the level of play, all that money goes to my MX ! :)

Well, at this point, my parents want to keep my car as an "investment" (?? What could they possibly get out of it??) for my younger brothers so I won't be able to sell it for less than $1000. :(
$1000 for this busted little thing? Any takers? <=D
btw, I'm 18, freshman in college :D and my bank account reads less than $500 -_-
