New axles shaking my car?

Post by CoolQcumber »

I have a 1993 GS. I recently swapped in a 2.5L KLDE. I decided to replace the drivers side axle as the boot was torn. When I took the car for the first test drive it shook like it had square tires!!! The problem has something to so with the axles. I replaced the passenger side axle and half shaft from my parts car. Another test run... almost fixed! Now the noise and vibration only occured when I turned left at speed. Today I replaced the passenger axle with a brand new one. Now my car shakes so bad it's going to tear itself apart.. Anyone hear of this before??? Did NAPA give me the wrong axles?? Thanks for reading.

Yes, the axles you got are too long. They're binding with transmission. It happens. Measure your axle length. I forget the passenger side, but driver side axle should be about 12.5" or less, when compressed. Sometimes when they rebuild axles they don't use the correct length shaft. Or maybe they just flat out gave you the axles from the wrong model. Axles are pretty sensitive when it comes to wrong size and require precision, not an approximate fit. Sometimes even being off by a few mm would cause a bind.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The drivers axle in my parts car is toast, but I guess I'll have to try it in my car. I'll post my results.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

When you replaced your axles, did you get the 1.8 axles, or 2.5 axles? Cause the 2.5 axles are like 2" longer.

When I first did my MX3ZE swap I had the same problem. Since axles have a lifetime warranty I just kept going back and swapping them until the vibration went away. I ended up going thru 5 driver's side and 3 passenger side I think. These were all mx3 axles too. They're a noticeably skinnier than mx6 axles.

In the end, my vibration is gone. I think some of the reman axles are just crappy and you have to get lucky.
