loose wheels, please help

Post by DimaK »

i was changing my oil today(i drive a pgt) and there always have been some kind of clunck when i went over bumps, never bothered seeing what it was untill today while the wheel was off the ground
when you take wheel from right and from left side, and kinda try moving it like it would when you steer, theres a huge play in it.....i remeber from school teacher telling us, if the weel moves when you take the wheel from top and bottom its either ball joint or tie rod, and left and right same thing, i never remembered which one is which, can you gus please tell me, thank you.

Its eaither going to be a wheel bearing or ball joint. Cheak the balljoint boots for rips. Also cheak the tierod boots while your at them and pull on them to see if they have any play. If they all look in tiptop shape then its probobly a wheel bearing, and your going to have to bring it to a mechanic because the bearing is pressed in the steering knuckle. To me it sounds like a balljoint, and those are pretty easy to replace.

It would make more sense to me that a loose balljoint would be noticed in an up/down motion, while a loose tie rod end would be noticed in a left/right motion. Wheel bearing will be noticeable either way, but you'd likely hear a hum/roar noise.

What year is your car DimaK, because on my Mx you can't just unbolt the hub. Some how your going to need to hammer the old hub out and carfully press in the new one or you can damage the new bearing right?

As far as I ever knew, the MX-3 uses a press-in style wheel bearing. Hub and bearing assemblies are not available for our cars.
