car died need assistance

Post by V8KOMX3 »

ok I ws driving the other day when my car just died. I tried to start it and no luck so I pushed it off the road tried to start it again got it to start and it died right after it started. When im looking under the hood as someone tries to start it I notice 2 things.
1) I get smoke coming out of my cold air intake
2) I smell fuel

I havent checked to see if I have fuel pressure but i am assuming I do because I can smell fuel. Im leaning toward my disty because its old. I do have a new disty but its 120 miles away at my home and since my car is broke down its goonna be hard for me to get back. does anyone have any ideas?

Could your timing belt have slipped some? I know that could cause the car to smoke out the intake and the car not to run. It happened to me, but not while it was driving.

Ya, how old is the T belt. Disty shouldn't cause smoke.

timing belt is around a year old. I don't think its my timing belt because my belt it still intact but I will check my timing anyway. Is there any way I can check timing without a timing light?

ok my disty was bad it had no spark so I changed it out 4 a new one and now it seems like the timing is not right. I put it in the same direction that I pulled the other out. what should I do to correct the timing issue?

This might be different for the V6, but on my 4cyl, I turned the crank till #1 piston was at TDC then I took wrenches and held the cam gears at their respective places (following autozones timing procedure) as my brother slipped the timing belt back on.

We didn't use a timing light or anything.
Car stopped smoking out the intake and runs now.

Edit: my bad, I didn't hold the gears I held the flat spots on the cams themselves. If it makes any difference.

well im going to grab a timing light from a friend today and check to see how far off it is. But I thought that the timing adjusts itself from the computer when you adjust a disty?

well I couldnt get the car to start again so I pulled the disty off and tried to put it on the other way but when I tried to I realized our disty is idiot proof and only goes on one way because one ear on the back of the disty is slightly larger than the other. It really tries to start I get a chug chug out of it sometimes but no start. i pulled out a spark plug after putting the disty back on and check for spark it had plenty and it had compression as well because air and gas or smoke came shooting out of the spark plug hole. Could it possibly be a bad fuel filter 2? well Im going to pull of my timing belt cover now and see of maybe my belt jumped but I highly doubt that is it. If anyone else has some ideas let me know.

Sure sounds like a belt/timing issue. The ECU can correct for incorrect timing but only so much. Usually your Disty is set so the bolts are in the center of the slot. With ten and grd jumped I tried to adjust my timing and the ECU kept correcting and it stayed at 10deg so I returned it to the bolts being in the middle of the adjustment slot.

Just got done looking at my timing belt and all seemed to be normal there. I do agree it seems like a timing issue but I could only get my disty to go in one way.... and t belt was good and in position. looks like another one of those times where my car just wants to be a pain in my ars.
