FD RX7 Hatch on an MX3

Post by hppwdn »

This may be a not so known rumor, but it's been passed around that an FD hatch will bolt right up to an MX3. Mainly because of this pic.

Image

Well, about a year ago I got an FD hatch and test fitted it. Wasn't a good fit, and it was raining so I didn't get pics. Today I was bored and put it back on for fun. It's not a bolt up affair by any means, and probably not worth the effort in body work. However, the FD hatch weighs about half as much as an MX3 hatch.

I've tossed around some ideas to make it fit and so far the easiest idea looks like having a shop make the fd glass fit in the mx3 hatch frame. It looks easier than building out the fd hatch to fit the mx3 body.

Both options seem very expensive and more for uniqueness than cost effectiveness. After all, I think lexan mx3 glass would be lighter than either way. But the fd hatch does look kinda neat.

Opinions??

Thanks for putting that to rest.

Why does it weigh that much less than the Mx-3 hatch? It's not that much different.

It would be worth the work if someone wants to get rid of the small window, but have clean lines where it doens't look like something is missing.

Wonder what kind of spoiler would look good with that hatch...

It's got 1/2 the glass the mx3 hatch does, making it alot lighter. I think it would look sick if you could make it work, but I agree...too much work.

Ideas like this never fail to impress me. You guys are out there pushin it, great. Ya lots of work. If your a metal worker probably not a biggy but for the average Joe with no tools, probably would require a heck of a lot of your time.

Or both...get it light enough on the normal struts and you could probably launch stuff at people when you hit the release...

A long time ago there was a pic of an RX-7 with an MX-3 hatch floating around the internet. Someone should try and find it.

There is a bulk buy going on for cf mx3 hatch - if they are talented they could modify the mold a "bit" to make it look like a FD hatch - and possibly put lexan in it too - it will be much better than trying to fit an original FD hatch....... just a thought....

yeah exactly... thanks for posting some pics so people can see what the differences are!

the CF hatches are going to be even lighter than the FD hatch by the time we put lexan in them....

That would be amazing. I would be in on that in a minute. Especially if they could ship it with the lexan installed in it.

What would be expensive. With the current group buy, they are liternally using the stock hatch as the template for the mold. To make anything else, it would liternally require to make that hatch in metal first, than use that at the template. That's alot more in equipment and time (as everyone noted the amount of work that needs to be done) which would drive up the price of the hatch significantly, moreso if there are only afew that are interested.

I don't think it even looks nice, yes its different but I don't think it improves the look of the car at all, it just doesn't flow with the MX3 shape IMO
