disty question...

Post by 4gotn »

ok i own a 95 with a 1.6dohc and i was hoping to remove the heap of sh!t they call a distributor on this car
ive been looking and i was wondering if i could fit the sohc's disty on the car and then run the coil remotely (without making even more of a mess)
or if i should change to the 1.6/1.8 distributless ignition

more or less i want to take care of my headache once and for all and run a remote coil and just a simple disty but im not sure if the coil could be mounted and still work properly
pros, cons?

note: i do have a sohc ecu if the coil is ran diff...that should work though?????

Yes it is possible to rewire a SOHC disty - but the trouble may lie in physically fitting a SOHC disty to the DOHC engine. Also in the DOHC the disty is on the exhaust cam which means the sensor wheel maybe different. If everything works out somehow - then you will need an external coil and an ignition module.

I know limegreen and a few others are using coil packs, but I think they have installed some kind of engine management unit to work it. I would love for limegreen to do a write up but he hasn't. Maybe he'll read this and reply.

ive ben looking and i notice the dohc did come with a .526 cam gear???, im assuming the size of the actual tbar inside the disty, but i believe i have the smaller of the two

id rather not switch to a stand alone simply because of cost but i know the miatas and sephias have coil packs so i was wondering if i could do an ecu swap and just carry over the cam sensor and coil packs but im not sure about wireing

ok now the shop manual doesn't list this and i have no digicam so just try to imagine this

on the back of the normal disty you have the "t bar" that rides on the cam
like any normal chevy/dodge/etc the gear is held in by a sort of push pin..maby a screw...
i think i might be able to get the sohc disty and swap the gears/bar and place the disty back in and and use factory wiring but heres the catch
the factory sohc had a 2 wire coil were as the dohc has a three wire coil...
im gona attempt to check some wireing diagrams for some solutions but if anyone knows off hand how to take care of it let me know plz

: found out that the blue wire is from the ignition switch and the yellow/blue tracer runs to the tack but i cant find the red :

The red wire goes to IG pin in the diag box. The red wire is basically same as the Yel/bLu tach wire - except the tach wire has a 1k resistor to protect the tachometer. The DOHC coil is a 2 wire coil - just the connector has 3 wires to accommodate tach wire. Look for HEI mod diagrams and it will give you a clearer idea.

If you want to swap in miata ECU you will have to swap in the wiring harness and possibly a few extra sensors as well. It wont plug into the dash harness - so you will have to splice into the dash wiring.

ok well heres what ive gathered so far
i can order a 92 disty and use one mounting bolt and create a bracket for the other and being as it doesn't come with module which wouldn't work anyways i can use the module for a 92 miata dohc (same thing) and then just run the coil somewhere else..splicing the yel/bl and red together..
the only thing is im not sure if the module off the miata will work like its supposed to...

module: http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDeta ... ber=CBE531" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(module is externally mounted and connects to nothing but the 8 wire connector)

You cannot just splice Yel/bLu and Red together - it will kill your tach - the Red wire goes to coil negative. The Yel/bLu goes to the same coil negative through a 1k resistor.
Also miata module may not work - you can use the $30 chevy HEI module. To use the miata module - you may have to install a crank sensor and wire it to the module and even then it will only run default timing because it would be expecting a different kinda control signal from ECU.

ok so can still install the red and yel.blu on the same terminal i just need the resistor?
second how would i wire the hei coil? it has 4 wire connection were as the factory has 8 wires... not to mention that is for a 8 cyl and im not sure that the timing would be accurate....

????

the coil it showed for the 92 and the one i pulled up were diff
heres a link to the one i pulled up at work
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDeta ... ber=CBE531" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it listed it for the 92 miata but it might be for a diff 1.6l setup...

i did find this
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDeta ... 18&PTSet=A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
which would take care of mounting issues and im thinking maby i could just splice a sohc and dohc wiring harness together...using the sohc disty setup and running the dohc injector connections etc...that should be the only diff...i have the ecu...not sure how well itll run..have to do some more research when i get home

Escort GT / Protege dist. swap.

Keep an eye on this if you want. It was as easy as cutting/splicing wires. Everything else was bolt-in. Tack works fine without the resistor for the few hours I drove it. I'll add it in tomorrow. I just needed to get the car home.

I'll put up pics when I get a chance.
