Will a 92 SOHC 4 cyl AT work in a 94 DOHC 4 cyl? UPDATE

Post by GringoEJS »

The automatic transmission in my mom's 94 RS is bad. There is not a cheap local AT for her car, but at the U-Pull-It yard, there is a wrecked 92 with the SOHC 4 cyl engine and a good AT. I would think it would work, but would I need to swap the tranny computer as well? Surely it should bolt up, but are there any differences with any sensors, torque converter, mounts, etc. Has anyone done this before?
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks

I'm pretty much giving an educated guess here, but I think that will work. No one has answered so I thought I would. Been a day or so.

The transmissions are OBDI in 92 and OBDII based in 94....

So find the plugs and see if they match. They should be.... and since you're downgrading, the ECU shouldn't have problems... There was no real difference between the transmissions, mechanically speaking.

Do an manual swap? The autos are so crappy.... reliability and zoom zoom...

I have never driven an auto, and I haven't ever dealt with them either... But if you do this, and it either works out or doesn't, please PM me, I'm organizing a thread with info like this :) Search for it, its here...

The 94 tranny is OBD II? I thought that started in 96 models?

From what I understand, the 94 and 95's were midway between obd1 and obd2. They have some components of each. So Since Ryan said "OBDII based" He's technically right. It has many characteristics of obd2 but its not quite there.

From what I understand in all of my Mazda knowledge, the crossover started in '93.

I just wanted to post back in case it helps anyone else in the future. I ended up putting in an AT from a wrecked 95 Protege that had a 1.5L in it. I was pretty sure it was the same transmission, but it seemed I never came across anyone who confirmed it. Anyway, I also used the Protege's torque converter, and I did have to swap the speed sensor. Everything else bolted right up. However, I did notice that if you have an AT Protege, the mounting holes for the rear mount are not there and therefore the MX-3 tranny probably wouldn't work without some fabbing. I just wanted to post this in case someone else can be helped by this. Oh yeah, the Protege tranny shifts great with no problems.

OBDII started in the 96 models. I have a late model 95 and it is OBDI
