[FS] SRD Reproduction Parts - Crossmember, Tie Bar & E-Brake

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

Prices:
Reproduction SRD E-Brake Handle : C$65 (Mx-3, 323, Protege, 626 and Mx-6)*
Reproduction SRD Tie Bar : C$100 (MX-3 4cyl and V6)
Reproduction SRD Crossmember : C$200 (Mx-3 V6 only)

*batch limited run of approx 30 units because on how the material is ordered. Subsequent batches can be done if there's enough demand

As I'm sure many know that SRD no longer makes any of their products. (:(). It took me several months just to find a used one, and even then i had to make a nice offer since they were on a car, but no matter, I got them. I know that a few people mentioned that they're interested in those parts, and after the difficulty I had to even find used ones, so I hoped that I could get them reproduced. Bochek makes aluminum parts, but they're too big for his machine, but I have a friend in one of my car club that I asked him if he could and he's very confident he can (he owes me since i help him with his air ride system ;)). I dropped off my parts to him thursday and I told him to make at least one set to see how it comes out.

I *think* the original SRD parts sold for around $150 for the crossmember and $80 for the tie bar. I don't have a price on making them yet, but i'm using those prices are a guideline to see if they're worth making. I have no idea on how expensive it is to get parts out of aluminum machined, but hopefully they're not much more compared to SRD's, if anything.

And yes I'l contact Jeff about the group buy stuff, I just want to get an interest and post the details on getting these done, if it's feasable.

SRD Front Crossmember:
-"V6 owners: upgrade your 4.5lbs OEM Stamped steel Crossmember with a stronger, stiffer and 1.5lbs lighter Aluminium billet unit. This crossmember installs in minutes with basic tools. Helps to maintain the front suspension's geometry under hard cornering, provides faster steering response and significatly stiffens the chassis. CNC-machined from 6061T6 Aluminium, comes unpolished

Function: the crossmember (sometimes called transverse member) joins the two chassis pickup points of the front suspension's control arms. Under heavy cornering, tremendous forces are applied to the chassis and without proper bracing will flex and generate poor steering response. V6 MX-3s are fitted with a "C" shaped stamped steel crossmember economical to mass produce. OEM brace provides a relatively high degree of bracing but because of the "C" shape some deformation is allowed. Furthermore, torsional resistance is quite poor: you can actually twist the part with your hands. Here comes the SRD crossmember: 150% stronger longitudinally and 275% stiffer torsionnally. As a bonus part is 1.5lbs lighter. Don't let your car twist in the twisties!"

SRD Rear Tie Bar:
"V6 owners: upgrade your OEM rear lower tiebar with this work of art!

4 cylinder owners: your car is missing an important part especially if you have aftermarket wheels and/or lowered suspension! This tie bar installs in minute with basic tools and helps to maintain the rear suspension's geometry under hard cornering.

CNC-machined from 6061T6 Aluminium with adjustable rod-ends for easy fitment."

I am interested. Would they be using 6061T6?
I've been thinking about finding a way to make myself some.

Yessir. But something in my brains says that some models you may need to drill and tap? It might have not even been for the MX though, maybe a protege? escort?.... I can't organize in my brain well. I just have everything in a mental pile.
But yes, they fit on an RS.

I'm not sure to be honest. As far as I've researched the answer is No.

Quote from SRD back in 2003
4 cylinder owners: your car is missing another important part especially if you have aftermarket wheels and/or lowered suspension! We are currently looking in ways to easily install this brace with minimal modifications to the RS' chassis. Stay tuned!<
I've never seen this on their or Corksport's website so i guess he couldn't get it to work?

I don't have an RS so I don't know. If I had an RS easilly acceesable to work with. It would be nice to find out on how to make it work, or even what it takes to modify it so it can, if possible. It is being blueprinted from scratch after all, but I can't find any information that even a stock GS crossmember was fitted on an RS

First thing I looked into. I thought it was some fancy high-grade stuff but apparently that's just a standard alunimum, nothing fancy. So yes, it would be made in the exact same stuff.

i know that stock GS lower tie bar bolts onto RS so SRD should have no problem bolting onto RS either. If someone can get me pic of rear suspension of RS from behind and some measurements i could measure to be sure.

Yeah, it's not Easton, or anything, but there is lesser quality than 6061T6 that would fatigue faster.

I'm going to get him to use at least 6061T6 since that's what is tried and tested. This isn't some cheap-knock-off money making scheme, nor some fancy item to dress up the Mx-3, this is to bring back a performance product that is no longer available and I intend on making them as 100% accurate to the SRD products.

Yes, the rear tie bar was advertised to work on an RS, it's the front crossmember that doesn't seem to work.

The crossmember is mounted across the car, from left to right wheels, right?

Here's some pics of my RS, if you need any more just let me know and I'll see if I can get some better shots.

I'm totally in. In fact, if this doesn't make it tp production, I'd be interested in seeing what a 1-off set would cost.
