Intercooler to Cold Air Intake

Post by MX3-Life »

I'm thinking about buying a Intercooler for my 94 MX3 GS and until i get my turbo i want to connect it to my Cold Air Intake System... I think it will increase the HP by some but not alot. Any thoughts on this? Or should i just wait awhile till i got the Turbo and if anyone has a good place to buy Intercoolers for a 94 Mazda MX-3 GS links would help alot thanks.

It'd be easy enough to do, but I wouldn't bother. You won't see any power gains. An intercooler doesn't actually make air colder, it just makes it closer to the same temperature as the air outside the car. This is a big advantage with turbochargers because they heat up the air significantly. A cold air intake should already be drawing in the coldest possible air from the atmosphere.

The temperature that the air drops to after passing through the intercooler doesn't have a huge effect directly on power output. It allows you to increase your boost even more without detonation, thats where the real power gains come from.

If you install the intercooler without a turbo, all your going to do is reduce your throttle response.

I definitely suggest reading "Maximum Boost" By Corky Bell before piecing together your turbo setup. Before working on my friends Turbo Silvia I read it cover to cover and I learned a lot.

You're just looking for an excuse to test-fit your intercooler, aren't you? haha.

Hey man i thought long and hard on this subject because i wanted to do an NA build. I was going to incercool my cold air intake than spray it with CO2 from a remote line. Adding an intercooler will decrease throttle responce and power, its meant to have air forced through it not sucked through as the motor demands. it woould be like you trying to breath through a straw that is a foot long, than try breathing though a straw that is 2 feet long. the 2 foot straw is better when air is forced through it because it gives the air a longer period of time to cool down plus you are increasing the flow and the velocity.
