comp acting up

Post by mitmaks »

ok, so this is started when I noticed that my cd drives wouldnt open. Then I tried to run spybot S&D but it wouldnt run it and just shut down the program when I tried to run it. This computer really pisses me off with all the problems Im having with it.

how old's u'r cd rom?
there's a little hold near the button that u can stick a straightened paperclip in to open it manually....after u do that, does the button close it properly?
could b hardware related

as for spybot dying, got an antivirus? attempt to go start > run > "msconfig"
then go to the startup tab and check what all's listed there (it's telling u all the programs that get started on bootup)

OK, start with the basics. What kind of computer is it? if it's a dell/hp/compaq ect. and you have the original installation, you'll want to start out with this program:

PC Decrapifier

Then work your way up and give your pc a tune up:

Ccleaner

Sometimes heavy fragmentation and/or bad sectors can cause system hangs and crashes. start with checkdisk

start>run>cmd
in command prompt:
C:\>chkdsk /r /x

let it reboot the system and run the checkdisk for a while.

then go ahead and defragment the mother.....

JkDefrag

I'd also suggest uninstalling/reinstalling spybot.

as for your cd drive not opening, turn it completely off (the computer) and back on , it should remove any operations on the drive and unlock it.

otherwise, use the paperclip.

let us know if you're still having problems after you tune your pc up.

Cars aren't the only objects that like tuneups

Go into your BIOS. If your cd-roms wont open, replace your drive or check the power cable going to it.

Start simple :)

its custom built computer, runs AMD processor v.XP
Interesting this is that when I try to go to System Restore it doesnt show me any dates that I can go back to and restore, like everything was erased
I think all this crap started happening after windows downloaded and installed some damn 'updates'

normally u run the check disk command from the recovery console by using your operating system cd, and booting off of it, the choosing the repair option which will take you to the recovery console. and then you could use this command.

I hope you didn't type in C:\>

but yes, chkdsk /r /x does work in xp.

If you have multiple drives, specify which one.

chkdsk C: /r /x

also, here might be the best solution: Windows SP3 RC1.

Windows SP3

Also, if you don't update your hardware drivers frequently, you might have some unstable platform drivers.
Nvidia has great support for all their hardware, as well as VIA.
if you are sporting a VIA motherboard, viaarena.com is their website.

you can also right click on my computer to go to the properties page. From there, check and see if your system restore is turned on and is functional.

I turn it off myself. If something goes wrong, I reformat. System restore always made things worse for me, but that's only my experience.

Its spyware

ya got a spyware problem then man...

Download
Hijackthis!
http://www.merijn.org/files/HiJackThis_v2.exe" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Process Explorer
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96653.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Put those (extracted) on a USB drive.
Boot to Xp safemode command prompt only w/ the USB drive plugged in already.

using the console, goto the USB drive and run process explorer via command line.

Close out anythinn that looks suspicious.
Use Hijackthis! to remove suspicious malware.

Then after you've closed out the suspicious programs running in the background..
@ the command prompt type EXPLORER and it will give you your desktop in safe mode.

Id suggest you download spybot and all its updates to the USB drive(FROM ANOTHER PC) , then install it

From there you can run spybot.

pop in your windows XP installation CD (make sure you have your CD key handy)
go to the bios and set the 1st boot device as your cd drive
hit the "anykey" button when it asks you to do so. The "anykey" button isn't labeled on the keyboard, but you should be able to find it ;)

you'll want to do a fresh install of windows, so ignore anything that says repair.

when it comes to partitions, you can either delete and recreate the partition(s) or just use the current partition that's available.
format in NTFS. don't do quick formatting, do just NTFS (unconditional formatting)
it'll also catch errors on the disk.

then let it install. You will loose all your data, remember!

You do have your windows CD, right?
