Buy the Ford Escort ZX-2 Tokico struts and two metal thrust bearings from Oemfordparts.com - $216.

Your choice of lowering springs - $200.

Bump stops and dust boots for four corners from any autoparts store - $100

You'll need to enlarge the hole in the upper spring perch to receive the escort thrust bearing. A 1 1/8" drill bit and round file will make this job a piece of cake.

i have a set that has 1000 miles on them, on stock springs so they lower 1/2". new top hats up front and new metal thrust washers. i have the receipt and i paid 325 not including the rear top hats (used but good shape). all are assembled so you would just swap them with yours.
