K8 ECU Question

Hey guys I have a question about the K8 ECU. I have the klze installed and I wanted to get a probinator chip for my ECU but it turn out that mine can not be chiped, its an early 1992. Well I found a junkyard 2 hours away that has an ecu from a 1993, however I will not be able to crack it open to see the eprom number before I buy it. What are the chances that it will be the one that can be chipped? I don't really want to waste my money.

Well I am not an expert on this topic.. but everything I have read says the 93 will be just fine to get chipped. How much does the junkyard want for the ECU? Have you tried e-mailing the Probinator guy and asking him about it? Cheers

Well the junkyard wants $50 for the ecu and $15 for shipping. I think its a pretty good deal.

Hey what is the eprom number on your 1992 ecu. If its is the right one I might buy it from you.

I am not sure what you mean by eprom, but its a k801 ecu.

You have to open the box up to get the eprom number. Its not on the outside of the ECU.

There will be a number printed on the back of the large computer chip looking thing. That is the E-prom and the number he needs.

I googled eprom and it makes sense now, but i still cant be for sure which is the eprom chip in there. What number do you need, and i will check to make sure its there.

Of the three chips i think to be the eprom but am not sure. I have
079753-1654, mp7990 1m30 this chip had a symbol that looks like either I/D or Half of a capital N leading into a capital D, and 2a1 rj hd63b21p this one is stamped japan underneath the number.

I also read up on the probinator chip and it says 93 and up ecu's, but i dont know why a 92 mx3 gs ecu would be any different than a 93.

No problem, just trying to help, and i learned in the process always good. If it were me, i would call the the people who make the probinator chip and find out why the 92 wont work. My guess why it lists 93-95 ecu because the probe had the kl in it from 93-97 and obdII started in 96. Most probe guys dont realize the mx3 had the exact same technology in the k8 in our cars a year earlier in 92.

I had a 93 MX3 ECU and Probinator couldn't change the timing and fuel maps on mine. It ended up all he could do with mine was change the VRIS points, but I had to keep the fuel and timing exactly the same as the K8 chip. If you want Probinator to give you a KL31 rechip, I'd suggest buying a used 93-94 Probe/MX6/626 V6 ECU.
