egr valve is pretty easy to clean out - my MX3 was running really rough and I got the EGR valve CEL as well. Take off the EGR valve, get yourself a nice bore brush / small rounded wire brush (like a plumbers wire brush for copper) and clean the piss out of the inside of it. Mine was gunked up with 1/8" of carbon. Some carb. cleaner to help with the process is nice too. You should probably replace the gasket when you do this too, it cost me $3 at the autoparts store. All together it was an $8 fix for me, and the car ran much better after!

did you take your egr valve apart or just put the brush in the hole where the line goes if you took it apart how did you do that

you do not need to take it apart, just be sure the diaphram works (you can suck on the valve) and be sure there are not obstructions of the flow. Last EGR i worked on I used a bent fork to clean out.

Usually when you work on a car and then there is problems afterwards you need to inspect every part you touched, that is where odds are you problem will lie. Its possible you might have your vaccum lines messed up as well.
