Sorry for the noob question.. but really... My moms escort gt has become SO SO SLOW.. on the freeway on ramp i gun it and it so sluggish!! checked o2 sensors, fine.. pulled codes and fine.. just that I know the vcis thingy doesnt work.. ill fix that .. I am now suspecting the kat converter. It has never been replaced since factory.. any ideas how to tell? sho0uld i get a test pipe and go from there?

When I had my cat replaced, he jacked the car up and showed me that the cat was leaking, because around the cat's heat shield was a bunch of black soot.

If the cat's leaking, it's dead, jim. check for that.

My cat leaks all the time. I often have to change the kitty litter. Oops! not that cat!

The muffler shops take a clothes hanger through the cat. depending on what dark discoveries come out with it, which should be none, that'll also tell you if your cat is D-E-D dead or not.

usually loss of power/mileage are the biggest things with a clogged cat and especially any leaking like mentioned above
1995 MX-3 1.6 DOHC 5SP.
