BP? Y or N??

First of all, a lil´ bit of instructions from Europe 4 you guys over the sea!!! :D :D
BP in Europe was : Newer type (115 hp), older types (128 hp & 140 hp)
I drive a 1.6 DOHC.

Now, when we got this settled, to my problem....
I found a 140 hp engine with supposebly 140k km for about 700$. Around here it´s an average paycheck for a month. Average I say...
So, my hands started shaking, and I called a mechanic who works a lot with Mazdas. Then the dissapointment. He told me tat there is so much work to put it in, and the result won´t be satisfying 4 me. He mentioned that they were racing this 140 hp against the 115 hp (had shorter gearbox) and that he wasn´t impressed at all. He said that the car could obtain the speed about 240 km/h, but the acceleration is pretty "low".
He told me that it would be a better idea to put a turbo or a compressor on my engine.
So the problem is that my engine sometimes blows bluish smoke on cold start. I think it would be better to buy the 140 hp BP, and then turbo it.
Of course, I don´t have enough money to turbo it immediately.
What do you guys think?? I mean, is acceleration really that bad on a BP???

Also, for the problems with engine install...

1. A/C - he told me I would have to find a A/C compressor from a 1.8 because the one from my 1.6 wouldn´t go. True?

2. Engine mounts. Are they a 100% direct fit???

3. speedo. is it different, and if it is, how much trouble is fixing the difference??

Hmmm... He told me some more things, but I will ask again when I remmember them...

Any help would be appreciated. :)

you use all your original engine mounts, all bolt up. i mean its up to you dohc 4 cylinders are 105hp at the crank and bp's are about 120 to 135hp at the crank. not too much difference but then you can do more with that motor. i would assume the A/c compressor bolts right up with your old one. someone else should vouche for this just to make sure not do it just on my word haha. but power steering and ac should both bolt up. its gonna be a bigger motor so you will be faster especially if you build it up. up to you lots of info on this site just use the search and good luck

your wireing is gonna be a bit of an issue i think with the DOHC harness

I know wireing is a bit tricky, but my mechanic said it´s not such a big problem, and of course - there is a manual in faq. Mye mech said that it could even be done with two ecu´s. I don´t know how, but it can be done. I just want to be sure that all the mechanical parts would be a bolt on, and if they aren´t I want to know which parts are critical... I have to make my calculations before going for it!!

Went new bp...direct bolt and plugin...just change the harnesses from the 1.6 to the 1.8 and go...

My only issue was i had it done @ a shop..and to get the 1year warranty(vs 30day for the motor) he had to do it "Right"...

I kept my 1.6 Tranny and the half-shaft support mounting bolts were out of place by about 1/2 and inch... So I Welded extra metal to the outer hole and moved all the holes...Then the mutha said that welded-cast steel wouldn't pass an inspection and he wouldn't warranty it...so i shelled out 130 for a new half-shaft from an unknown vehicle, aka he never told me.... But it fit perfect...

now with the halfshaft mounting bracket is this still a problem i wonder with 90-94bp's? or just the new gen bp's? is there much of a difference between lets say a 92bp or a 95bp?

the old bp's look like old bp's ... you have to change quite a few things mounting wise...the new bp's look EXACTLY the same as the b6dohc..just bigger and there's no mount changes at all...just the half-shaft...

I didnt have any problem with the axles - ofcourse mine is an atx and i used the BP tranny.

cy your using your sam F series tranny correct? i wonder if the missalignment happens with the bp manual transmission as well? im pretty sure im gonna keep my sam tranny but im not positive i gotta change my wheel bearings and ill have some extra money so might as well go with the bp tranny.

oh i read on wikipedia on the bp engines from 1995-98 protege es there is a non performance version? anyway to identify from the top of the engine bay?

i'm pretty sure it was because i used an f series... but if you go g series you have to either make your own outer cv...or change the wheel hubs....

90-94 bp's have a valve cover that doesn't cover the cam gears and the top is ribbed

95-98 bp's have a valve cover that is smooth and covers the cam gears

if you have a 1.6L dohc that is the same engine as the miata 1.6L dohc you can get miata cams / cam gears / pistons / turbo manifolds / etc. the 1.6L engine while not as nice as the bp does actually have a lot of aftermarket you just have to look for miata parts

Yes the AC bolts up perfectly fine BUT you have to take the mountin plate from ur 1.6 and put it on the 1.8, As for the power sterring bolts right up to the block.

yeh the new bp looks like a 1.6L...exactly...just enlarged like 10%
