Engine problem
Engine problem
Hello, i'm from spain so sorry for my english...
I've just buy a MX-3'97 1.6 16v and i like it but there are some problems.
Sometimes overall in cold, when i try to go faster the engine do not respond. It's like there's not enogth fuel and this is a problem when i drive on a highway.
I think it could be the air mass meter but i'm not sure.
I need help...

have you tried a basic tuneup? (replace spark plugs, replace disty cap & rotor, clean air filter, change oil)

(SOLD) '94 RS, rebuilt B6 DOHC engine & cyl head, ACT clutch, e-bay CAI, 2 1/4" exhaust, wide open resonator w/ stock muffler, H&R springs, Tokico HPs, front strut tower brace, KVR drilled rotors w/ carbon fiber pads, Falken tires, Impostor lightweight wheels, Kenwood & MTX sound.
straights are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers.

Thanks for the answer.
The spark plugs and air filter are quite new. And don't think that is a ignition problem, i'm sure that the problem is with the fuel.
I've change the direct intake air filter for the original and the problem has less frecuently.
I tried to read the ECU memory but it hasn't any code.
I don't know how test the air mass meter, i need the resistance values or similar.
Thanks.

new plugs? this means you have touched the plug wires...
if the plug wires aren't new, change them as well, even if they look nice and pretty, for they are delicate beings...
try again...

sometimes, an engine will idle fine with a bad spark plug wire/s, however, mid-range rpms is where the spark tends to jump and ground to a part of your engine, most likely a bracket or head, however, at a higher rpms sometimes the engine will perform better, see if you can slowly rev your engine up to ~ 2500, then 3000rpm and then hold the rpms steady at 2750, this should be a very smooth acceleration curve, also your engine should be able to stay at 2750 (keep your foot steady) without the idle spiking higher or lower, leave your a.c. off when testing this, you can also check in the evening hours (dark hours) for any sparking around your wires, if it's really bad you'll hear the arc of the spark-jump (cracking/popping eletrical sound)...
also, i've had some bad wires at least twice on my mx, not once has it caused a back-fire in the exhaust... but it resulted in terrible mid-range performance, oh, it fails the emission test because of unburned hydrocarbons, heh heh...
last note, if you change your plugs, change the plug wires, dist cap and rotor like DJGypsy suggested...
good luck...

I recomend changing the fuel filter, sometimes its plugged enough that at higher engine rpms/demand it restrics enough to cause a pressure drop and not allow enough fuel pressure to the rail.
-->could explain when its cold the fuel is thicker, but when the engine warms up the underhood temps, make the fuel warmer, providing better flow throuhg the filter.
just my 2cents
