Quick question for Gro or anyone else with external coil

Post by FIMotorMX-3 »

I'm trying to do the external coil/hei mod and when mounting the power tower i'm a little confused. In the tutorial you say you drilled the hole deep enough to bury the screw then covered it with rtv sealant. How large of a hole did you drill. The power tower has one long screw with an exposed wirey material wrapped around it (where the hell does that stuff go?). The tower itself has four red plastic prongs at the bottom of it where it would mount to the cap. Is the hole I'm drilling suppose to be just big enough so that just the screw will slide threw, making contact with the metal strip running through the cap or do I have to drill a hole large enough for these four prongs to slide through the cap? Or do I cut the prongs so that the tower sits flush on the cap? The pics on the tutorial didn't really explain that portion of the power tower. Just the final product. Unfortunately the only thing that came with instructions from msd is the coil itself. Nothing came with the power tower or any of the wiring. I can figure everything else out from your pictures and descriptions but ofcourse I'm lost on the first damn thing. lol. Any help would be great. I wanna get rid of my misfires....

You want the hole to be just big enough for the screw to fit through. Then you can put the screw through from the inside of the cap and screw it into the rest of the power tower. I just left the wirey stuff on it thinking that it would give a better connection (more contact surface) with the metal plate. As far as making the plastic part of the power tower fit, I just used a dremel on it until it sat flat on the cap. Finally, cover the screw head with rtv silicon and also make sure that you remove the old coil and break off the connecting pole that goes to it from the cap and cover it with rtv silicon. The consequence of not properly insulating with rtv silicon is that your ignition system will start sparking out causing a clicking noise and the car to run badly or die (It may not even start). Hope this helps make it a little more clear.

Thank you forrest, that helps a lot. i've got most of the work done now and just have to wire that coil up to the disty cap and gut the coil and post. I figured all that had to be done was have the screw touching the metal thru the cap and shave down those prongs to fit it to the cap. I just didn't want to start cutting the thing and ruin something b4 asking. Kinda figured if I cut the hole big enough to fit the prongs thru, there would be no metal to metal contact nor would there be anything holding the tower in place because the screw would have nothing to clamp down onto. :2thumbsup: I'll let you guys know how the setup works. Any other suggestions, let me know. I hope to nail this in one shot but if she doesn't start, I'll be back on here.
