Some advice?

Post by Jeff K »

MY Mx-3 was hit a few months ago and there is a larg dent around the rear dirver side wheel. I was planing on trying to do all the fix my self. I have never done any body work and just know a far amount. I know i need to pund it out and pull it... and than apply body filler. Than sand it till it's perfect. Well thats all i know any tips or tricks. I can add photos of it if any one wants.

It will be much harder than you think. Make sure to get a good rubber mallet, dent puller, and a impact hammer (air tool, so you'll need a compressor) Use the rubber mallet first to get hte major part out. Then the dent puller to pull smaller areas to a more correct shape. Then use the air hammer to lightly tap the parts out that the dent puller doesn't get. Then when the dent is less than 1/8 of an inch dented you can start applying the bondo. (make sure none of the metal is coming out from the car's body. It obviously all needs to be dented to get the body filler to do its job. Several thin coats is MUCH better than one thick one. Sand the painted area about 6 inches from the edges of the dent and apply the bondo out to the sanded edge. When you are satisfied with the dent repair take it to a shop to have them blend the paint. You cannot make the paint match so let a professional do it and it will look better, but only a full paint job will look perfect on an older car like ours.
