Loud Engine at Highway Speeds
Loud Engine at Highway Speeds
I have a 1993 MX-3 1.6L manual transmission with 105K miles.
The engine is very loud at highway speeds, and gets louder the faster I go. Particulary starting at around 50MPH. It's a very loud "RRRRRRRRRRRRRR" kind of constant droning noise from the engine.
Are there some bearings worn, or something else in my transmission perhaps? Valves?
It's loud enough that I often wear earplugs when driving on the highway.
Thanks,
-Ed

check out the exhaust...mine had a hole right after the header but it was under a heat shield so it was really hard to see.

err not tryin to be a-- but you your engine is a 1.6 not a 1.4
It's not the exhaust, I've had that problem before and it sounded completely different.ryanlindenberg wrote:check out the exhaust...mine had a hole right after the header but it was under a heat shield so it was really hard to see.

OK, fixed the error in my post. Now I can get even more helpful posts since people will know precisely the displacement of my MX-3's engine.cdngrl420 wrote: err not tryin to be a-- but you your engine is a 1.6 not a 1.4

Is it noisy only at that speed - or is it also noisy when your just parked and revving the engine. If yes then at what rpm does the noise start and gets louder? If its not a rattling noise then maybe it is the exhaust. If its noisy only at specific speed (whatever the rpm is) maybe something wrong with the tires, axles etc.
Well, the engine is noisier than I remember it being when it was new, but not very noisy. Nothing rattling really.ariesdude wrote:Is it noisy only at that speed - or is it also noisy when your just parked and revving the engine. It's at higher highway speeds that it is much noisier. It get's most noisy starting at around 50MPH, but it is not suddenly noisy from nowhere. It ramps up. But it gets progressively noisier, the faster I go.
