16G turbo on a BP = Sleeper

Post by JWMotorsports »

We got tired of playing with the all motor BP setup. The car is running pretty good, smacking local Hondas left and right running all motor. We decided that it's time stop advancing the timing (setting at 26* advance currently) and give the turbo Hondas a hidden dose of their own medicine. We're keeping it sleeperfied for the moment.

We fabed up a short runner manifold (my left over manifold pieces), picked up the slightly used 16G turbo from my brother's Talon (I'm rebuilding it with a GT32 turbo, oversized valves, blah blah blah), jacked the side mount IC and BLOV off of it while we were at it, and I donated my old RC Eng 440cc injectors. The car already has a Wahlbro 255 pump in it, Jacobs Ignition, Magnacore KV85 Plug Wires, SPEC light weight flywheel, ACT racing clutch, and massive weight reduction.

The side mount intercooler is going in front of the driver side wheel well, it required a little more weight reduction to make it fit  . We're even using the stock DSM IC hoses (for now).

Here are some pics of the turbo manifold with the 16G just bolted to it (those are the stock DSM Oil and Water lines still on it). We'll keep posting updates...soon to include time slips, etc...

have you ever had any problems with your stock MX3 radiator? i don't think mine is doing enough cooling for my BPT. the top hose is hot and so is the bottom one after running it...shouldn't the bottom one be relatively cooler? i just installed a 180 degree thermostat(flushed out the system while i was at it), the engine will stay at that temp for awhile when i'm driving but will slowly climb to around 200 degrees after a bit (according to my haltech). sound like a bad radiator? if so do you know of a good kind to get that will fit in the MX3? thanks.

by the way is that turbo setup going into an MX3??

i know its not a BPT, but my KL-ZE runs about 210 degrees according to my true temp gauge

what kind of mixture are you running (water/coolant)? During the summer you can run pure water if you wanted. The colder your climate is, the more coolant you'll need. I usually run 50/50 with a bottle of Red Line Water wetter in the winter. Summer time I'll run 30/70 with a bottle of Red Line water wetter. Using purified water or the 50/50 premix from the parts store with one bottle of Red Line water wetter is the way you need to go. As far as your coolant temp. how long has it been since you replaced it? Another lovely part available is the Mazdaspeed High Volume water pump. Once your cooling system has warmed up you won't notice a huge temp. differance between the hoses by grabbing them with your hand. It is possible for your radiator to be bad. Also, did you check to see what temp your fans come on and shut off? Your haltec should be controlling them. If your fans are set to operate at a higher temp. than the thermostat then it could cause it to appear to have cooling problems.

ok fellas I work the cars with JWMOTORSPORTS and I am actually the owner of the bp car. 16G is on and everything is working properly, well we didnt get the fuel injectors in last night so i can only hit like 2 lbs of boost before she leans way out and detonates, but everything went pretty smoothly

Here are a few pictures if youd like to see.

We have installed a turbo timer, boost gauge, and a S AFC II, also the car has a jacobs ice pack ignition on it. Internally... all stock just like it was found at a junkyard, the car does have a larger 2.25 exhaust on it, and a pro lx tranny, also a lightweight flywheel and stage two clutch with 6 puck metallic unsprung disk. The intake has been ported and polished, and larger 440 injectors have been installed along with a different fuel pressure regulator.

that water wetter stuff works pretty well??? my car only got up to 88 degrees Celsius today (probably around 190F)...it wasn't hot out or anything like that though. i did race my friend up to around 105 MPH and it didn't break 90. i still need to change my fan settings as they were set for my 195 thermostat. maybe there was a small air pocket or something that came out too...who knows. i'll just keep an eye on it i guess...i really don't want to install a new radiator anyways.

forcedairram: keep us updated...i'm excited to hear what this thing can do.

The Water Wetter does REALLY well. It helps with heat transfer. I think your problem though is your cooling fan settings since they are still set for the 195* thermostat. I'd put water wetter in with a 50/50 premix and set your cooling fans for the 180* thermostat and you should be fine year round.

Ok fellas we just got back from Dyno Day at ET Motorsports, at 7 pounds of boost the car ran 189.8 hp and 202.6 ft-lbs of torque, second run lost like one hp and got up to 210.6 ft-lbs. hopefully we will get an external wastegate on soon and bump the boost up to about 14-16 psi, we will get back to you with the results of that run.

Nice job! Thats some pretty good fab work, and a darn good use of the ol' noggin!

Let us know what it runs :)

I've always wanted to play with one of those BP's myself. Sweet motors.
