Cost/Benefit - Removing Rust around Wheel Wells

Post by JimminyJillikers »

Heya Folks,

I am seriously considering buying this 92 MX-3 inside of the next two days. However, the car I am looking at buying has significant rusting around the two rear wheel wells. There is about 2" of rust surrounding the wheel wells; in some places the rust eats right through the sheet metal.

I would like to know how a ballpark figure of how much you folks would think it would cost to fix/remove/replace the rusted panels. If it's too much, I don't think I'll get the car; but if it's reasonable I may consider putting some work into it.

Thanks!

To replace the panels will probably be easier but more expensive unless you source the panels from a J-Yard. If getting them from a J-Yard it will be expensive to have them cut them off a car, so I'd suggest doing it yourself if you know how. Be careful, if you don't know what you are doing you will cut them wrong and they won't be usable. I can't remember what Mazda gets for a set, but they are pretty expensive. If someone can cut the rust out and replace just the bad spot it will be alot less expensive, but more difficult if the rust is at a bent spot. Best bet is to talk to local body repair shops.

Not to hijack a thread, but I'm beginning to rust through my two rear tire wells as well. It sounds from the description that I have about the same type/amount of rust. I'd like to hear any other ideas or possible cost of repairing/replacing them.
